KABUL, Afghanistan — A Taliban leader who led an uprising to wrest control of Pakistan’s Swat Valley might have been killed Wednesday in a battle with security forces in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan security officials said.
Maulana Fazlullah and 700 of his fighters, both Afghan and Pakistani, launched a siege two days ago on the Barg-e-Matal district in isolated Nurestan Province, according to Mohammed Zaman Mamozai, the Afghan police chief for the eastern border area. That siege sparked fierce fighting that resulted in the slaying of Fazlullah and at least six other Taliban fighters, Mamozai said.
But other provincial officials said they had not confirmed the death....
