Audit says West Africa cocoa industry still exploiting children
West Africa's cocoa industry is still trafficking children and using forced child labor despite nearly a decade of efforts to eliminate the practices, according to an audit published by Tulane University.
Thousands of children travel from impoverished countries to the cocoa plantations, where some of them live in substandard conditions and receive little or no pay.
Think of that as you are having your hot chocolate this morning, American -- or scarfing down all that Christmas candy.
Maybe we can just think of them as Santa's elves on earth -- and what a sad picture it portrays of life on this planet.
And just like Santa and his elves, they soon vanish.
