QUINCY— A Quincy woman, who some neighbors say doted on her two sons, was arraigned yesterday at her hospital bedside and charged with murdering her youngest child.

Li Rong Zhang, 39, is accused of starting a small charcoal grill fire in her bedroom Thursday afternoon that killed 8-year-old Brandon Yang and left her close to death from carbon monoxide fumes inside their two-story home in the Germantown section of the city....

Firefighters broke through a makeshift barricade to gain entry to the bedroom.

Investigators believe Zhang intended to kill her son and commit suicide, based on the barricade, the fact that the apartment had heat, and that no food was found near the grill....

“I understand it’s quite common in their native country . . . China,’’ Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan said, referring to a method of suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, as a by-product of a charcoal fire....
