Australian Flash Flood and Follow-Up Photos

"Flash flood hits city in water-weary region of Australia; 8 dead, 70 missing" by Associated Press / January 11, 2011

BRISBANE, Australia — Flash floods swept through an Australian city yesterday, killing at least eight people and leaving more than 70 others missing after the latest downpour to hit Australia’s flood-wracked Queensland state....

This after the paper told me it was drying up and out.

The flood of muddy water picked up cars and tossed them like toys, carried away furniture as it washed through stores, and prompted scores of emergency calls as it swamped Toowoomba, a city of about 90,000 in Queensland state in the northeast.

Several people were trapped in their cars and others were left clinging to trees as relentless rains brought more misery to a region battling its worst flooding in decades....

Darkness and fog prohibited the state emergency service helicopters from making overnight rescues and some people were still waiting to be taken off roofs this morning.

Rescue workers were battling more bad weather today. Heavy rain and thunderstorms were forecast for the region for most of the day, which could lead to more flash flooding, the Bureau of Meteorology warned....

Photos from the printed paper:

"MORE MISERY -- Residents of a suburb of Brisbane floated yesterday, as residents of Australia's third-largest city woke to find thousands of homes flooded and many areas without electricity. The flooding, which has killed 22 people since late November, has submerged dozens of towns and left an area the size of Germany and France under water (Boston Globe January 13 2011)."

"CLEANING UP IN AUSTRALIA -- Floodwaters receded yesterday in Brisbane and surrounding suburbs, and the country's third-largest city began removing sludge that is covering streets and thousands of houses. "Everybody rolls up their sleeves in this town," said Brisbane Mayor Campbell Newman, who cautioned that the cleanup effort could take months (Boston Globe January 15 2011)."
