Cleaning Up Kentucky

"Kentucky man sues over frostbite in VA hospital" by Brett Barrouquere  |  Associated Press, October 03, 2012

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An Army veteran is seeking $10 million from the federal government, accusing a Veterans Administration nurse of repeatedly putting ice packs on his penis after surgery, causing frostbite and gangrene and ultimately leading to the organ’s partial amputation....

I don't think Viagra will help.

Michael D. Nash, 61, of Louisville, entered the VA hospital on Oct. 28, 2010, to have a penile implant and circumcision. A nurse applied ice packs to Nash’s groin to reduce pain and swelling. The problem arose when the medical staff allowed the ice packs to remain in place for about 19 hours.

"Hundreds in Ky. to lose health insurance under court ruling" by Associated Press  |  Associated Press, November 01, 2012

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Members of a Christians-only health insurance plan will lose their coverage on Thursday under a judge’s order to cease operations.

Franklin County Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate found that Medi-Share doesn’t comply with Department of Insurance regulations and won’t be allowed to operate in Kentucky.

That means some 800 Kentuckians will lose their coverage.

‘‘We just don’t think the Department of Insurance or Judge Wingate thought through the reality that you have 800 people now that, overnight, have nothing,’’ said Medi-Share president Tony Meggs. ‘‘The state, with Medi-Share, should come together to provide some type of transition for these people.’’

Meggs said members of the Christian health plan were being notified Tuesday that the program ends Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Meggs said attorneys are urging Wingate to reconsider the abrupt end to the program in Kentucky to allow time for members to find other insurance coverage.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A sobbing mother was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for setting fire to her home and killing two of her children at Fort Campbell, in what prosecutors described as a scheme to escape a rocky marriage and collect on her soldier husband’s life insurance policy.

In a tearful plea for leniency, 39-year-old Billi Jo Smallwood showed photo albums and her son’s toy chest while professing her innocence to a crime that could have put her in prison for the rest of her life.

‘‘Those are my children, my babies that grew inside of me,’’ she told US District Judge Thomas B. Russell. ‘‘I love them so much.’’
