RALEIGH, N.C. — A Confederate battle flag hung inside the old North Carolina State Capitol to mark the sesquicentennial of the Civil War is being taken down after civil rights leaders raised concerns.
Cultural Resources Secretary Susan Kluttz said Friday night that the intent of the exhibit was to represent the State Capital as it was in 1863.
Kluttz said the exhibit was temporary. But since she’s learned that Governor Pat McCrory plans to use the old House chamber as working space, the display will come down this weekend.
The flag was to remain on display through April 2015.
McCrory spokeswoman Kim Genardo said the flag exhibit will be relocated, possibly to the N.C. Museum of History. A final decision is expected next week.
State historic sites director Keith Hardison said Thursday the flag should be viewed in its proper historical context.
North Carolina NAACP president the Rev. William Barber was shocked Friday when he was shown a photo of the flag.
‘‘He is right that it has a historical context,’’ Barber said. ‘‘But what is that history? The history of racism. The history of lynchings. The history of death. The history of slavery.’’
