Police said a second-grade student brought an inert hand grenade to the Frederick C. Murphy Primary School in Weymouth Thursday morning.
Local police and fire officials determined that the grenade had been hollowed out and was not dangerous, but “out of an abundance of caution” called in the State Police Bomb Squad, said Police Captain Richard Fuller.
He said the bomb squad verified that the grenade was harmless and removed it.
“It does not appear that there was any malicious intent involved,” Fuller said. “At no point was anyone in danger.”
School Superintendent Kenneth Salim said school officials are conducting an investigation to find out why the girl brought the grenade to school and where she got it and will determine whether she will be punished. The public school has about 290 students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
Salim said the school was not evacuated because “it was pretty evident immediately that the item was an artifact; it was pretty clear that it was hollowed out and unarmed,” he said. “But we wanted to make absolutely clear that it was safe, so we called in the experts.”
They must have needed something to do that day to ju$tify their jobs.
