Slow Saturday Special: Globe's Lunch Specials of the Day

I will be needing to break for my own shortly.

"Company fires some in Attleboro school lunch incident" by Zachary T. Sampson  |  Globe Correspondent, April 05, 2013

ATTLEBORO — A national stir....

I helped!

Brenda Furtado, vice chairwoman of the Attleboro School Committee, said she has heard from parents that some students were crying and putting their heads down on tables after being told they could not have lunch....

Have our kids really become such a nation of pussies? Did any of them get angry, or are they all on pharmaceuticals in one form or fashion?

A senior representative from Whitsons will attend the School Committee’s meeting Monday night to answer questions, said committee chairman Michael Tyler. He said someone from the company will also meet with the Coelho Parent Teacher Organization on Wednesday.

Attleboro’s public schools have a five-year contract with Whitsons that includes a fixed first year, followed by four years with options to continue the relationship. The schools are still in the first year of that contract and have not yet exercised next year’s option, said Tom Rose, business manager for the district.

No wonder Whitson's is scrambling.

The school board has final approval on the contract....

To demonstrate its commitment to the community, Holly Von Seggern, vice president for marketing for Whitsons, said Whitsons will additionally provide free lunch to all Coelho school students for three days next week, starting Wednesday, and will host a barbecue for students and their families at a future date.

Tran$lation: They want to keep that contract.

I thought we might check out some chicken shacks today:

"KFC to offer easier-to-eat boneless chicken in US" by Candice Choi  |  Associated Press, April 06, 2013

NEW YORK — In case Americans want to scarf down their fast-food even faster, KFC is stripping the bones out of its chicken.

The fast-food chain says it is introducing deep-fried boneless chicken pieces on April 14 as an alternative to its traditional breast, thigh, and drumstick pieces.

The new offering reflects the growing popularity of nuggets and strips that are easier to eat on the go, as well as Americans’ seemingly endless desire for more convenient foods....

While we are all trying to get healthier because of the alleged obesity crisis (even as nearly 25% of us suffer from hunger)?

‘‘Younger people don’t tend to be fans of bones — they’ve grown up with nuggets,’’ said KFC spokesman Rick Maynard, referring to people in their 20s and 30s....

What, you kids so lazy we have to teach you to eat?

I hope the insults didn't ruin your appetite.

The new chicken, which is skinless and comes in white or dark meat, are whole muscle pieces fileted off the bone and are about twice the size of KFC’s crispy strips. Customers will be able to order them for the chain’s meal deals, which include two pieces of chicken, a side, a biscuit, and a drink....

That's like five-star fast food!

Howard Penney, a food industry analyst for Hedgeye Risk Management, noted that KFC has been struggling in the United States and that it has nothing to lose with the latest move....

What? My KFC might close?

KFC is owned by Yum Brands Inc., which also operates Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

Oh, they aren't going anywhere. I'll see those ads all over the college basketball games tonight (been invited to a friend's house for pizza; I sure hope it isn't Pizza Hut).

Maybe you want to go Chinese instead?

"China chicken scare pecks at Yum’s profit" Associated Press, February 05, 2013

NEW YORK — Yum Brands warned Monday that it expects its profit for the year to decline as the parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell continues to reel from a controversy over its chicken suppliers in China.

A drop in 2013 would snap an 11-year streak of profit growth of at least 13 percent.

The company, based in Louisville, Ky., gave the grim forecast after its profit in the fourth quarter fell 5 percent....

But they STILL MADE MONEY in these TOUGHT TIME, huh?

Since an investigation aired on national Chinese television on Dec. 18, Yum has been dealing with an ‘‘onslaught of negative media attention,’’ spokesman Jonathan Blum said.

Yum's got a stomach ache? Give 'em a Tums!

The TV station had reported that Yum’s suppliers were ignoring regulations and giving chickens unapproved levels of antibiotics.

Got a nice, big, meaty piece of chicken in my KFC box!

A government investigation into the issue was concluded on Jan. 25 and Yum has agreed to adopt measures to strengthen its oversight of suppliers. But the company says it will take time to recover.

Even though Yum has far more locations in the United States, its restaurants in China are far more profitable because the cost of doing business there is lower and there’s much more room for growth.

Yeah, it's their number one objective

You are yesterday's economy, American. That's why they are hiring foreigners to fill your jobs.

For the period ended Dec. 29, Yum said net income fell to $337 million....

How grim for three months of "work."

You know, I thought it smelled kind of funny.

Or would you rather just brown bag it?

"Former Senator Scott Brown, speaking to reporters after delivering the keynote speech at a dinner to mark the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death."

Not only is that weird, but I'm offending by the PtB constantly using that man's memory to push their agenda

That was a photograph my printed paper carried, no article.

Or maybe you would rather have an apple for desert (if you can afford it, that is)?
