Sunday Globe Special: Good Morning Irene

"Vermont’s recovery from Irene hits two-year mark" by Wilson Ring |  Associated Press, August 25, 2013

WALLINGFORD, Vt. — It will be years before the ground is productive again....

Like thousands of Vermonters whose lives were forever changed by Irene....

‘‘Our recovery is still full-on.’’

***********************************

Two summers after Irene, the state is nearing the end of its official recoverybut there are hundreds of people and businesses whose recovery is still in progress and some are looking for permanent homes.

That the same sort of coverage we saw after Katrina, Sandy, and any other disaster that strikes. They aren't rebuilding or recovering s***!

Nevertheless, a series of celebrations and commemorations are planned for this week, starting on Wednesday’s anniversary....

Who celebrates tragedy?

"Vt. man to avoid death penalty in niece’s killing" Associated Press, August 25, 2013

MONTPELIER, Vt. — A convicted sex offender charged with luring his 12-year-old niece to his home with the promise of a pool party before molesting and strangling her is expected to plead guilty on Tuesday, avoiding a federal death penalty trial, which legal analysts said are not as common as they used to be.

Federal prosecutors have not said what prompted US Attorney General Eric Holder to agree to the deal.

******************************

Jury selection for Michael Jacques’ death penalty trial was scheduled to begin after Labor Day.

Brooke Bennett’s parents, Jim Bennett and Cassandra Adams, told a Vermont television station that they were disappointed in the outcome.

Richard Dieter, a national death penalty specialist, said said President Obama’s administration is not as pro-death penalty as that of President George W. Bush.

Holder is personally against the death penalty, but has said he will apply it.

Obama supports the death penalty, but as a state senator in Illinois he worked for death penalty reform, Dieter said.

Obvious by his war-mongering and missile strikes.

‘‘I don’t think they’re as adamant, especially in a state that doesn’t have the death penalty. I think there was an effort in the Bush administration to spread out the federal death penalty cases. They would be pursued in non-death penalty states,’’ Dieter said.
