"Man charged in theft of Las Vegas casino chips" Associated Press, October 31, 2012

LAS VEGAS — A man suspected of sneaking into a restricted area of the Venetian resort and stealing $1.6 million in casino chips was arrested in Southern California, Las Vegas police said Tuesday.

Authorities credited media attention about the case for a tip that led them to Palmdale resident Akingide Cole, 31....

It was unlikely anyone would have been able to redeem all the stolen, high-value chips, which are usually circulated among a small group of high-rollers, said Jerry Markling, the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s chief of enforcement.

Casinos typically have a second, differently styled set of chips that can be put into circulation after a theft, Markling said. That way, someone trying to play with stolen chips would stand out....

"Missing girl found dead; father’s ex-girlfriend is suspect" Associated Press, December 29, 2012

LAS VEGAS — A body found in an undeveloped North Las Vegas housing tract was that of a missing 10-year-old girl who was last seen with a suspect in a casino slashing case, authorities said Friday.

Clark County coroner’s officials identified the body found a day earlier as that of Jade Morris. Officials say she died of multiple stab wounds.

The girl was last seen Dec. 21 with Brenda Stokes Wilson, who had picked her up to go Christmas shopping. Family members say the girl had a close relationship with Stokes, who used to date her father.

Wilson was arrested later that night after she allegedly slashed a co-worker at the Bellagio casino with razor blades. Blood was found in a car borrowed by Stokes, a prosecutor said Friday. Wilson was identified in court as the prime suspect in the slaying but has not been formally charged.

“It’s no secret the defendant is the suspect in the murder of 10-year-old Jade Morris,’’ Daskas said as he persuaded Judge Joseph Bonaventure to increase Wilson’s bail from $60,000 to $600,000 pending the filing of kidnapping and murder charges in Clark County District Court.

Wilson has been jailed on charges of battery with a weapon, burglary, and mayhem in the slashing case. Murder charges would carry a sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Wilson stood in court flanked by eight police officers as her lawyer, Tony Liker, clutching a Bible and a copy of the charging documents, asked the judge to postpone arraignment until Wednesday to give him time to meet with Wilson.

Liker declined comment outside court.

Police went public with the search for Jade Morris on Christmas Day. Wilson used to date the girl’s father, Philip Morris, and had a long and trusted relationship with Jade Morris, according to the girl’s grandfather, Philip Tucker.

Philip Morris, who lives in Billings, Mont., was removed from court Wednesday by court officers after shouting questions about his daughter’s whereabouts to Wilson. He did not attend Friday’s hearing.

"Nevada lawmaker released in threat case" Associated Press, January 22, 2013

LAS VEGAS — A Nevada lawmaker was freed from jail after his weekend arrest on a felony charge of threatening to harm a state Assembly party leader at a home in North Las Vegas, a police spokeswoman said Monday.

Assemblyman Steven Brooks, 40, was held a little more than 24 hours before his release from the Las Vegas city jail Sunday evening, North Las Vegas police Officer Chrissie Coon said. A judge had set bail at $100,000 on a charge of intimidating a public officer by threat of physical violence before, Coon said.

The first court date is Jan. 28, one week before the legislative session begins. If convicted, the charge could get the Democratic lawmaker one to five years in state prison and a $10,000 fine.

Oh, he is a DEMOCRAT!? I guess that is why this was minimized! Democraps are the good guys in my Globe!

Brooks was arrested Saturday while driving in North Las Vegas a little less than two hours after police were called to a home on a report that a lawmaker had threatened harm to a colleague. Coon said witnesses corroborated the threat, but declined to specify it or the person or people to whom it was directed. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the threat was directed at Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, a Democrat.

"Nevada officer dies helping to rescue hiker" Associated Press, July 24, 2013

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas police officer fell to his death Monday night while rescuing a hiker who was stranded in a forbidden area of the mountains northwest of the city, authorities said.

Officials said search-and-rescue officer David Vanbuskirk, 36, had attached a harness to the hiker who was stuck on a ledge near Mary Jane Falls on Mount Charleston and had signaled the helicopter above to hoist them both up when he fell.

Vanbuskirk had been with the department since 1999, officer Bill Cassell said.

KLAS-TV reported the hiker reached the helicopter and was not injured.

TV cameras captured a procession of police cars driving through the dark with their lights on after the accident in a gesture of respect for the fallen officer.

In another hiking-related death, a woman succumbed to the heat Monday while visiting The Wave, a flowing sandstone rock formation near the Utah-Arizona border that claimed the lives of a California couple earlier this month.

Elisabeth Ann Bervel, 27, of Mesa, Ariz., died of cardiac arrest when a medical helicopter arrived too late to save her, authorities said.

Bervel was celebrating her fifth wedding anniversary with her husband, Anthony, when they lost their way on a 3-mile, unmarked route back to a trailhead, forcing them to spend extra hours under blazing sun in 90-degree temperatures and humidity.

The Wave is a richly colored geological upheaval, its fiery swirls emblazoned on postcards, posters, maps, and computer screensavers. It is said to be one of the most photographed spots in North America....

UPDATE:

"O.J. Simpson won a small victory Wednesday in his bid for freedom as Nevada granted him parole on some of his 2008 convictions for kidnapping and armed robbery involving the holdup of two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas hotel room. But the decision doesn’t mean Simpson will be leaving prison anytime soon. The former NFL star was convicted on multiple charges and still faces at least four more years behind bars on sentences that were ordered to run consecutively."
