Worcester Party Went Awry

"Police say teen in fight died after being struck by object" by Anne Steele |  Globe Correspondent,  September 01, 2013

An 18-year-old man died after an altercation during a party at a condominium complex in Worcester early Sunday morning, according to a statement from Worcester police.

Officers responded about 4:45 a.m. to reports of an injured person at the Crestwood Arms complex at 121 Bailey Road, where they found the teen unresponsive and not breathing. CPR was performed at the scene until the arrival of emergency responders.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:41 a.m, police said. The cause of death was unknown, according to police, who said the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy.

The victim, who was not identified, was attending a party with several people inside one of the apartments, according to the authorities’ preliminary investigation, when a fight broke out between him and someone else. The fight then continued outside .

“During the altercation, the victim was struck with an object and the fight ended,” police said in the statement. “The victim ran off. He was found later on by friends on the property of the complex.”

Andrew McCrea, a resident at the condominium complex said he heard a commotion about 2:30 a.m. that sounded like a party had spilled over outside the building. He said he heard swearing back and forth, and then someone say, “Let’s take him to the hospital.”

McCrea described the complex as normally a “quiet, safe place.”

“It’s big news around here,” said McCrea, who has lived at the condominium complex for about eight years and has rarely seen a police car there. “We never have any trouble.”

He said some of the units in the complex, which is near Worcester State University, are rented to students, but it is mostly married couples and older people....

Donald Gagnon, who has lived at the complex for 26 years, also said the fight was unusual. “This is somewhat shocking, it’s a pretty peaceful area,” he said....
