"Carver mother, daughter killed in head-on collision" by Anne Steele |  Globe Correspondent, September 22, 2013

A mother and daughter from Carver are dead after a vehicle they were in crashed head-on with another vehicle in Plymouth early this morning, according to officials. The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Federal Furnace Rd., according to Captain John Rogers of the Plymouth Police Department.

A 64-year-old Carver woman, who was driving one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 24-year-old daughter, who was in the passenger seat, was taken to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth where she later died, Rogers said. The second car was driven by a 25-year-old Kingston man who was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was listed as stable, and is expected to survive, according to Rogers.

An initial investigation indicated that the vehicle driven by the Carver woman strayed into the opposite lane of traffic. At this time, police do not believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash, officials said. Police did not release the names of the victims.

Plymouth Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating.

The trooper, 25-year-old John J. Basler of Kingston, will face charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and carrying a firearm while under the influence of liquor, according to Plymouth police, and more charges could follow.

Susan Macchi, 64, of Carver, and her 23-year-old daughter, Juliet Macchi, were killed in the crash, which occurred just after midnight last Sunday on Federal Furnace Road.

Basler, who was sworn in as a state trooper in March 2012, was not on duty at the time....
