Slow Saturday Special: Tunnel Vision

Maybe I have it; however, it is hard to ignore when you know it is there and is validated by the coverage.

"Israel finds biggest tunnel from Gaza | Associated Press   March 22, 2014

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military announced Friday it has uncovered another tunnel — the biggest so far — dug from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, stretching into Israel and intended for militant attacks or abducting soldiers and civilians.

According to military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner, the opening of the ‘‘terror tunnel’’ was hundreds of yards inside Israel.

Israel has found several such tunnels in recent years but this was the biggest found to date, Lerner said. He said parts of the tunnel were still uncovered and that there are concerns it could be booby-trapped. He said it was near several Israeli border communities but did not give a more exact location.

The part of Gaza’s border that adjoins Egypt is honeycombed with tunnels used for smuggling.

The tunnel into Israel was found this week by Israeli intelligence and the military, Lerner said, saying the structure was lined with concrete and describing it as very sophisticated, resembling a subway tunnel.

Starting to smell like s*** propaganda to me.

‘‘This advanced tunnel was intended to pose a direct link and threat to Israeli territory, and enable Hamas terrorists to reach and harm Israeli civilians,’’ Lerner said.

An electric generator and tools, along with fresh tracks, were found in the tunnel, indicating that it had been worked on recently, he added.

Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said he blamed the tunnel’s discovery on recent rains that exposed its opening, insisting the tunnel itself was old.

"Palestinians threaten to resume UN campaign" by Mohammed Daraghmeh | Associated Press, March 20, 2014

JERUSALEM — The Palestinians threatened Wednesday to resume their campaign for international recognition at the United Nations if Israel calls off a planned release of Palestinian prisoners, deepening a crisis that has threatened to derail US-led Mideast peace efforts.

Israel pledged to release 104 long-serving Palestinian prisoners in four stages at the outset of the current round of talks last July. The fourth and final release was set to take place by March 29.

But in recent days, Israel has signaled it may not carry out the final release. Israel’s chief negotiator, Tzipi Livni, said Tuesday that Israel never committed to the releases and that much would depend on progress in the final month of talks. After months of deadlock, Israel is seeking an extension of negotiations beyond the current late-April deadline.

Nabil Shaath, a Palestinian official, said Wednesday that the Palestinians would ‘‘immediately’’ resume their UN campaign if Israel reneges on the release. The Palestinians froze these efforts as part of the US-brokered package that relaunched the negotiations last year.

‘‘We committed to not applying to the UN agencies and Israel committed to release 104 . . . prisoners in four batches,’’ he said. ‘‘That was the deal. If Israel breaches it, we will too.’’

The issue of prisoners is deeply emotional for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The Palestinians consider the 5,000 prisoners held by Israel to be heroes in the struggle for independence. Prisoners freed in previous releases have received jubilant welcomes upon their return.

Israel considers the prisoners to be terrorists. The people freed in the previous releases had all served lengthy sentences for participating in bloody attacks on Israelis, and the Palestinian celebrations have sparked widespread anger.

But Israel may have little choice on the matter. On Tuesday, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States supports the prisoner release.

HAH!

‘‘It’s part of what was agreed to between the parties,’’ she said.

SO?!

That mean Tzipi a liar (and slut)?

In addition, the resumption of the Palestinian campaign at the UN could cause new headaches for Israel on the global stage. Israel has condemned the campaign as an attempt to circumvent peace talks.

The spat over the prisoner issue is the latest sign of trouble for Secretary of State John Kerry, who has spent months brokering talks between the sides.

Kerry had set a late-April target for a full agreement. After that became unrealistic, he said he would try to present a ‘‘framework’’ agreement by April that could be the basis of additional talks for a final deal.

That scaled-back goal now appears to be in jeopardy as well due to deep gaps between the sides.

His framework of bridging proposals goes nowhere because he keeps adopting Israel's position on everything.

"Former housekeeper for Netanyahu says he was abused; Suit accuses wife of prime minister of mistreatment" by Josef Federman | Associated Press   March 21, 2014

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was engulfed in a fresh controversy Thursday after a former member of his housekeeping staff filed a lawsuit claiming he was mistreated and verbally abused by the Israeli leader’s wife, Sara.

It was the latest case to taint Israel’s first family, who have been accused of enjoying an extravagant lifestyle while ignoring the struggling middle class. Netanyahu’s office rejected the claims, calling them outrageous.

Now I know where our leaders are getting it from.

In his lawsuit, Meni Naftali says he was repeatedly subjected to abusive language, including an ethnic slur, by Sara Netanyahu during his 20 months on the job. He is seeking the equivalent of roughly $185,000.

No!

In one instance, Naftali said that Sara Netanyahu called him at 3 a.m. to complain that he had bought milk in a plastic storage bag instead of a carton. In another, he claimed that she chastised him because some flowers in a vase were a day old, comparing the residence to the French presidential palace.

‘‘When Sara saw flowers that were ‘not fresh,’ she flung them to the floor, as she yelled at Mr. Naftali calling him ‘a bad housekeeper,’ and that something like that would never occur in the ‘Elysee Palace,’ ’’ the lawsuit says.

Naftali also claimed that Sara Netanyahu derided his ethnicity when he ordered food for them in a hotel, implying that his Middle Eastern background was somehow uncouth. Over the years, Jews of Middle Eastern ancestry have often been seen as an underclass in Israel compared with the politically dominant Jews of Ashkenazi, or European, descent.

The AmeriKan media just confirmed what I've said for years about the Khazarian usurpers. They even hold themselves above the native Jewish population, never mind Palestinians. It's more than racism, too -- it's pure Zionist eliti$m.

‘‘Mrs. Netanyahu castigated the plaintiff, and explained to him ‘We are Europeans. We are refined, we don’t eat as much as you Moroccans. ... You are fattening us and then when we are photographed abroad, we look fat,’ ’’ it said....

Playing into the anti-Zemitic stereotype, right?

NEXT DAY UPDATE:

"3 Palestinians killed after Israelis target Hamas operative" by Mohammed Ballas | Associated Press   March 23, 2014

JENIN, West Bank — Israeli troops killed three Palestinians in an early-morning raid that was followed by a clash with angry protesters in a West Bank town on Saturday, the military and Palestinian security officials said, in the deadliest violence in months.

The violence came amid a recent spike in clashes in the West Bank that could complicate the already troubled peace efforts as the sides near an April deadline set under US-sponsored talks.

Which is what the Zionist government of Israel wants, for if they wanted peace we would have had it long ago.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s office condemned the violence, calling it ‘‘part of an Israeli policy that aims to destroy everything,’’ and asked the US administration to intervene to save the peace talks.

Saturday’s violence started with an Israeli raid, which the military said aimed to arrest Hamza Abu el-Heija, a 22-year-old Hamas operative wanted for involvement in shooting and bombing attacks against Israelis.

It's called a PROVOCATION!

Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner described el-Heija as a ‘‘ticking bomb’’ and said he was wanted for months and was allegedly in the final stages of planning a major shooting attack against Israelis.

Palestinians officials said the military ringed the house in the Jenin refugee camp overnight and ordered el-Heija outside. When he refused to come out, soldiers stormed the building and a shootout ensued.

Lerner said everyone but el-Heija had left the building before the shootout. The military says el-Heija first shot an attack dog that was sent inside and then opened fire on the troops outside, wounding two soldiers. When he attempted to escape while still shooting at the Israelis, the troops returned fire and killed him, Lerner said.

Within minutes, hundreds of angry residents and gunmen gathered and attacked the soldiers.

I'm getting the feeling there was something more going on here than the Israeli version I am given by my pre$$.

The troops opened fire and killed two Palestinians and wounded several more, he said. The military initially said three Palestinians were killed in the shootout but later revised the number.

El-Heija was the son of Hamas leader Jamal el-Heija, one of the longest serving prisoners being held in Israel. From his prison cell, the father praised his son’s ‘‘heroism’’ and ‘‘blessed his confrontation with occupation forces until his last bullet,’’ adding that he prayed in prison for his martyrdom.

I suppose that last round of prisoner releases is on hold now.

The three main Palestinian militant groups, linked to Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Abbas’ Fatah, issued a joint statement warning of retribution against Israel and the Palestinian leadership for allegedly cooperating with it.

I'm suspicious of those groups because that doesn't help the cause; retaliating only serves Israeli interests as it cedes the moral high ground.

The Jenin refugee camp has been a flashpoint for violence in the past. During the Palestinian uprising in the last decade, the military launched a huge operation there to root out militants and dozens were killed.

Tensions have been heating up again in recent months with the perceived lack of progress in peace talks.

First I've seen of it in my Globe.
