Children dressed as superheroes, queens, and football players ate pastries and listened to the story of Purim at Boston Children’s Museum on Sunday.
The early Purim event was organized by the PJ Library, a nine-year-old nonprofit that gives free books to Jewish families with young children, in collaboration with the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston and Combined Jewish Philanthropies.

But one Purim book has incited some controversy for the PJ Library recently.
“The Purim Superhero,” written by Elisabeth Kushner and illustrated by Mike Byrne, was the winner of a contest for Jewish-themed books with gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender characters. It tells the story of Nate, a boy whose friends are all planning to wear superhero costumes to their school’s Purim festival. Nate, who wants to dress as an alien, is conflicted about his choice, and goes to his two fathers for advice....
Winnie Sandler Grinspoon, a trustee for the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, explained in a blog post that while organization officials would like to offer books that reflect different types of families, they know homosexuality and same-sex marriage are taboo for some of their subscribers....
Intolerant Jews?
Idit Klein, executive director of Keshet, a Jamaica Plain-based advocacy organization for LGBT Jewish people, which held the book contest, said her organization has been talking to the PJ Library about the book since its release nearly a year ago....
In the story of Purim, written in the biblical Scroll of Esther, an adviser to King Ahasuerus named Haman plans to kill all Jewish people in Persia.
I've seen this movie before, and Persia (now Iran) protects its thriving Jewish population of 25,000.

Esther, a Jewish member of the king’s harem who became queen without revealing her religion to Ahasuerus, persuades him to spare her people with guidance from her cousin, Mordechai. Haman is hanged, and the Jewish people celebrate.
Today, Jews celebrate the holiday by wearing costumes, sending food-filled gift baskets to friends, and rattling noisemakers at the mention of Haman’s name. The holiday this year begins the evening of March 15 and ends at sundown March 16.
The PJ Library — the name is a nod to pajamas and bedtime stories — was founded in 2005 by Harold Grinspoon, a Western Massachusetts philanthropist who made his money in real estate, to encourage literacy and a sense of community in Jewish families.

In January the organization, which operates in the United States, Canada, Israel, Australia, and Mexico with plans to expand into more countries, gave away its 5 millionth book in North America to a 3-year-old in Natick. Starting next month, it will deliver 130,000 books a month to Jewish families in North America, Greenfield Simons said.
It has also started sending books to 45,000 Israeli-Arab children through its new initiative, Maktabat al-Fanoos, “Lantern Library” in Arabic.
Once the kids learn to read they may discover the true face of Zionism.

Elena’s parents, Sarah and Tom Weber, are Scotland residents and PJ Library subscribers visiting Cambridge on an academic sabbatical. They try to expose their daughter to her Jewish culture whenever they can, Sarah Weber said.
“The Jewish community in Aberdeen, [Scotland,] where we normally are, is quite small. It’s nice to be in a thriving Jewish community like Boston,” Tom Weber said.

Transit giant Keolis America has become embroiled in a controversy over Holocaust reparations that threatens to mar the company’s international reputation just as it prepares to take over the reins of the Massachusetts commuter rail system.
The company’s majority shareholder is the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French national railway that historians say transported more than 76,000 Jewish people from France to their deaths in concentration camps, including Auschwitz-Birkenau, during the Nazi occupation.

Now, lawmakers in Maryland are weighing a bill that would bar Keolis from pursuing a lucrative light-rail contract in the Washington, D.C., suburbs if Holocaust survivors living in the United States do not receive reparations.
Some people are thankfully barking about that.
Some Massachusetts residents say they wish such legislation had been enacted before the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority awarded Keolis a $2.68 billion commuter rail contract in January, the largest operating contract in state history.
Some concerns about the French national railway’s role in the Holocaust surfaced during the final stretch of the contract-bidding battle between Keolis and the current operator, Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. But the T forged ahead with the deal.
“We were very disappointed that the contract was awarded without any consideration of the rights of the survivors,” said Harry Shamir, 75, of Plymouth, whose grandparents in France were taken to a concentration camp on trains operated by the railway. “It needs to be rectified.”
The railway company says the Nazi-backed Vichy government in France forced the railway to transport Jews and other prisoners to the death camps. While the railway company believes Holocaust survivors should receive reparations, it says the French government — not the company — should pay them.
Keolis America says it had nothing to do with the war, as it was not founded until decades later.
Neither did I, neither did millions and millions of citizens in these sates and countries, and yet we are all being asked to pony up more money the the greedy Jewish money-grubbers?
“It’s a series of misrepresentations,” said Alain Leray, president and chief executive officer of SNCF America. “There is no historical basis for enacting such a rule and such a law in any state anywhere. We acted under duress.”
Like the allies that collaborate when the US invades and occupies or overthrows a government.
A French law passed just after World War II mandates that the government pay all reparations for actions by French companies, state-owned or private, that were linked to Holocaust atrocities. According to the law, the state failed to protect its citizens from the Nazis and therefore is responsible for the actions that took place by those conscripted by the Vichy government.

The French government says it has paid billions in reparations to survivors. But those living in the United States previously have not been eligible.
When is enough enough?
Last month, Stuart E. Eizenstat — a lawyer, former ambassador to the European Union, and State Department special adviser on Holocaust issues — flew to Paris to begin formal talks with the French government about Holocaust reparations for American survivors. He said delegates are sensitive to the advanced age of most of the survivors who would benefit from an agreement.

“I’m pleased that they are doing it, and it is to their great credit that they are doing it,” Eizenstat said of the French government agreeing to discuss aiding American survivors.
There are no estimates of how many Holocaust survivors might receive the reparations, or how that money would be distributed. “We’re just trying to get our arms around the dimensions of the issue,” Eizenstat said.
A petition on Change.org, signed by more than 118,000 people, demands that the railway pay reparations.

“SNCF did not even publicly apologize for its role in the Holocaust until three years ago, not coincidentally at the very same time that SNCF was pursuing lucrative high-speed rail contracts in the United States,” reads the petition, penned by Holocaust survivor Leo Bretholz, who lives in Baltimore.
“As it was during the Holocaust for SNCF, so it is now — all about money,” the petition said.

Leray suggested that competing companies are fanning the fire of the controversy, and said the railway and Keolis have the deepest respect for Holocaust survivors.
“It is a tragedy that cannot even be described,” he said. “There are some people out there who are trying to profit from the most horrific event in human history — and they are clearly distinct from the survivors.”

He pointed out that Keolis runs rail service in Israel and has established a partnership with Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the world’s foremost Holocaust research center, to aid understanding of transportation during the mass deportation of Jews in World War II.

Leslie Aun, spokeswoman for Keolis America, said the company was being unfairly targeted.
“Keolis has no World War II history,” Aun said. “It would be sad if the hardworking people at Keolis were penalized for events that have absolutely nothing to do with our company, or anything to do with them.”

Shamir, an engineer who designs fencing equipment, said that seeing someone held responsible would bring him “closure.”
“It is the goal of this company’s inheritors to shut their minds and shut their hearts and shut their responsibility,” he said. “It is not allowable.”
Jeremy Burton, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston, said the case has garnered much interest in the Jewish community in Boston, but he insisted there are no easy answers. “It’s not a simple good-versus-bad,” Burton said.

Burton said he believes reparations for Holocaust victims are a good thing, but he does not think legal mandates like the one pursued in Maryland are necessarily a good idea.
Because one day the war-criminal looters of the USraeli empire and companies connected to them will be told to pay for their massive war crimes!
“There’s more than enough shame to go around,” he said. “We need to grapple with that honestly.”

SHARON PRISON, Israel — Israeli special forces raided a prison Sunday and killed an inmate — who was serving time for a gruesome murder in the United States — after he stole a gun, shot several guards, and barricaded himself.
Police identified the inmate as Samuel Sheinbein, an American who fled to Israel after murdering and dismembering another man in Maryland in 1997 and whose case sparked a high-profile row between the two allies.
Won't have to worry about it now, right?
Police special forces rushed to Sharon Prison after Sheinbein stole a weapon and shot three guards, wounding two of them seriously. He barricaded himself inside the compound and a standoff ensued with counterterrorism units.
The inmate then opened fire again, wounding three more guards, before the forces shot him to death, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
Hospital officials said one of the wounded guards was fighting for his life. Sheinbein’s lawyers told Israeli TV that their client was under duress and that the Israeli prison service ignored warnings.
Sheinbein, 34, was tried in Israel in 1999, two years after he fled to the country and sought refuge from extradition, briefly threatening US aid to the Jewish state.

"Last night I watched a truly epic piece of shit called “The Monument’s Men”. I shut it off near the end. I couldn't bear it any longer. Of course there was a beautiful airbrushed hero named Epstein. They also discuss The Rothschild art collection while painting Rothschild as a poor victim of those nasty Nazis. This film is so bad... how bad? You won’t believe it till you see it. I am surprised that the celluloid didn't spontaneously combust from the tinder dry lies recorded on it. There is one execrable moment after another. Were they not all totally sold out whores, the actors should have died of embarrassment during the filming of this crap.
