Exorcising These Florida Clippings

"Woman drives children into ocean | Associated Press   March 06, 2014

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.— A pregnant South Carolina woman who drove a minivan carrying her three young children into the ocean off Florida had talked about demons before leaving the house, according to her sister who called police, officials said Wednesday.

Time to call an exorcist.

After the call to dispatch Tuesday, Daytona Beach police officers stopped 31-year-old Ebony Wilkerson’s black Honda Odyssey, and she expressed fear that her husband would be coming to Florida to harm her and her children, said Police Chief Mike Chitwood.

‘‘When we spoke with her she was lucid,’’ Chitwood said.

He said there was not sufficient legal reason to take her into custody.

Two hours after the police stop, Wilkerson drove into the ocean. Bystanders and officers helped pull her and her children — ages 3, 9, and 10 — from their minivan as it was almost submerged.

The children were turned over to welfare authorities and Wilkerson underwent a mental evaluation.

Officials said it’s too early to say whether Wilkerson would face criminal charges.

"Fugitive killer caught after decades" by Curt Anderson and Suzette Laboy | Associated Press   March 15, 2014

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — In the nearly 40 years after he escaped from the maximum-security military prison at Fort Leavenworth, convicted killer James Robert Jones carved out a new life for himself in Florida, living under an assumed name, getting married, and working for an air conditioning company.

It all came to an end this week when Jones — or Bruce Walter Keith, as the former Army private was known — was recaptured with the help of technology that was more sci-fi than reality when he broke out during the disco era: facial-recognition software....

The marshals caught up with Jones on Thursday after using facial-recognition technology to match a Florida driver’s license picture with his old military photograph....

That's what the federal government is doing with all the communications and photographs. Matching them up.

"Teen tried to poison teacher, school says" | Northwest Florida Daily News (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.)   March 14, 2014

SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. — A teenager is accused of trying to poison his teacher by putting hand sanitizer in her Diet Coke.

That's going a little far, but at least it wasn't a shooting.

The 15-year-old was arrested Tuesday and charged with poisoning his teacher’s drink, the Northwest Florida Daily News reported. The charge is a first-degree felony.

Walton County Superintendent of Schools Carlene Anderson said the teacher is fine, though she became physically ill and went to the hospital after drinking the tainted soda.

Anderson said South Walton High School officials told her the boy is a prankster who didn’t intend for the teacher to get sick. In addition to his arrest, the teen has been suspended and faces an expulsion hearing.
