An abandoned furniture factory on Mill Street in Gardner was hit with its second fire in less than three weeks, officials said....

Both fires resulted in minor injuries. The first sent two people to the hospital with smoke inhalation; in the second, a firefighter suffered minor injuries to his hand.

On Tuesday, firefighters spent nearly five hours at the scene. The blaze was fought solely from the exterior of the building because the old factory is condemned and not structurally sound, Acting Fire Captain Gregory Lagoy said. State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan is assisting the Gardner Fire Department in determining the cause of the fire, Lagoy said.

The first fire involved a mattress and other debris that belonged to some homeless people who Lagoy said congregate in the abandoned factory. That fire was contained to the debris and did not damage the building, Lagoy said. It was determined that the fire might have been started by a campfire inside the building....
