Sweating It Out at Kent State

"Urban Outfitters apologizes for blood-stained Kent State shirt" The Washington Post   September 16, 2014

WASHINGTON — ‘‘Get it or regret it!’’ read the description for a ‘‘vintage’’ Kent State sweatshirt that Urban Outfitters briefly offered for $129. There was just one available for purchase. And it was decorated with a blood spatter-like pattern, reminiscent of the 1970 ‘‘Kent State Massacre,’’ which left four people dead.

Can't even talk about it.

In May 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on unarmed student protestors at Kent State University. The shooting inspired a famous Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young song, ‘‘Ohio.’’

As outrage spread about the sweatshirt, Urban Outfitters apologized Monday morning. It said the bright red stains and holes were simply ‘‘discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray.’’

The statement added: ‘‘We deeply regret that this item was perceived negatively.’’

‘‘We take great offense to a company using our pain for their publicity and profit,’’ Kent State University said.

Although Urban Outfitters said it removed the shirt “immediately from our website,’’ someone on eBay claims to have purchased it. A listing for the shirt, with a starting bid of $550, popped up on eBay shortly afterward.

The seller claimed he or she will donate ‘‘50% of the profit to The Southern Poverty Law Center, who protect those who cannot protect themselves, often those who are victims of police brutality.’’

Turns out they are nothing but an agenda-pushing hate group.
