"Ex-state senator pleads not guilty to drunken driving
A former state senator from West Warwick has pleaded not guilty to a charge of drunken driving. State Police said they arrested Stephen Alves on Route 146 in Lincoln on Thursday night and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and refusing to submit to a chemical test. State Police said he rear-ended a tractor-trailer, and a third vehicle crashed trying to avoid them. Alves was in court Tuesday to be arraigned on the drunken-driving charge and was released on $1,000 personal recognizance. He was slated to be arraigned Wednesday on a charge of refusing to submit to a chemical test."
