Escobar Killed Sosa on Elmwood Street in Everett

"Bail denied for Everett suspect in killing of Nantucket man" by Laura Crimaldi, Globe Staff  January 20, 2015

MALDEN — An Everett man was ordered held without bail Tuesday on charges that he twice shot a Nantucket man in the head, killing him, after a fight early Saturday, a prosecutor said.

The victim, identified by prosecutors as Magno Sosa, 32, of Nantucket, was found on Elmwood Street in Everett with two gunshot wounds to the head at about 1:55 a.m., said Jessica Noble, an assistant Middlesex district attorney.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

Rigoberto Escobar, 26, was arrested on Sunday. He was arraigned Tuesday in Malden District Court, where not-guilty pleas were entered on his behalf to charges of murder, carrying a firearm without a license, and possessing a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

Escobar admitted during questioning to fatally shooting Sosa, Noble said. Prior to the fatal encounter, Noble said, Sosa had been at a bar with friends and then went to a home on Main Street with Escobar and several others she did not name.

Escobar and Sosa got into a fight, she said. During the altercation, Escobar and another person punched Sosa, Noble said. Escobar then chased Sosa down a side street and shot him, she said.

A firearm was also recovered, Noble said.

An interpreter assisted Escobar during his arraignment. Noble said Escobar told officers that he is from El Salvador and admitted to being in the United States illegally.

I'm sure he was just looking to put food on the table for his family, blah, blah.

Of course, this one-day is not used as a cry for gun control or against Obama's dictatorial amnesty.

She said Escobar has a criminal record.

A probation official said he was on pretrial probation for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a police officer.

His defense lawyer, Elda James, declined to comment.

A group of people who identified themselves as Sosa’s family members also declined to comment.

Escobar is due back in court Feb. 19.
