Slow Saturday Special: Boston Globe Love Letters

"Brookline bookshop searches for owner of love letter" by Andy Rosen, Globe Staff  February 06, 2015

Used books often arrive at Brookline Booksmith with mementos tucked between their pages. Usually, the staff leaves them around to see if the owner returns. It’s rare that anybody does.

But a recent transaction turned up a letter so deeply personal that the Coolidge Corner shop is making an extra effort to find the writer — or the recipient....

"Suspect held in Bourne ambush, attack" by Peter Schworm and Evan Allen, Globe Staff  February 05, 2015

BOURNE — A heavily armed man shot two women who served with him in the US Coast Guard, killing one, before ambushing police officers who had rushed to the scene of the attack early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Shortly after the women were shot in their Bourne condominium, the alleged gunman, Adrian Loya, opened fire on police, hitting one officer in the back, authorities said. Loya, armed with three rifles and a handgun, pinned officers down with a hail of gunfire for 15 minutes before he surrendered in the condo complex just before 3 a.m.

The assault appeared to be well-planned and carried out with cold precision. Loya, who turned 31 Thursday, had set fire to a car blocking the single road to the secluded Sea Watch Village complex, and had deployed a number of “incendiary devices” in the snow as hazards.

The explosions and gunshots woke neighbors, who were left struggling to make sense of the attack....

It was “certainly was an ambush of the police officers.”

Real or another agenda-pushing psyop?

"Accused gunman ‘fixated’ on Bourne shooting victim; Investigation of attack ongoing" by Peter Schworm and John R. Ellement, Globe Staff  February 06, 2015

Authorities say Adrian Loya, 31, of Virginia, entered the Bourne home Lisa Trubnikova shared with her wife, Anna Trubnikova, and shot them both. Anna Trubnikova, also a Coast Guard petty officer, remains hospitalized.

Lisa Trubnikova’s relatives said that Loya was stationed with the two women in Alaska several years ago, and became infatuated with Lisa. After the couple moved to the Cape, he continued to pursue her romantically, although she showed no interest, relatives said.

“He became obsessed,” one family member said, who asked not to be identified in deference to the criminal investigation. “He was fixated on her.”

Relatives said they did not believe Lisa Trubnikova had reported his behavior to the Coast Guard, believing she could handle the situation on her own.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive, but Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said Friday there was no evidence to suggest the attacks were hate crimes or acts of domestic violence. He said neither of the women supervised Loya in the Coast Guard.

Growing up in a Christian family in Texas, Lisa struggled with her identity in high school and was very shy, her older brother said, Luis Berlanga said.

“She held it in,” he said.

But after high school, she came out as gay, with her family’s full support. When she met Anna, the family was thrilled.

“She wanted to live her life,” he said.

Relatives of Anna Trubnikova could not be reached for comment. On her Facebook page, she wrote that she had been an operations specialist in the Coast Guard since September 2010....

Did he leave a note?

"Mother, daughter found dead in Brockton home" by Evan Allen and John R. Ellement, Globe Staff  February 06, 2015

BROCKTON — Jose Rosa, Ariana Rosa-Soares’s father and Marley’s grandfather, said he had long been worried his daughter could not take care of her children. He had seen her slap and kick them, he said. “My daughter, she is not a good mother,” Rosa said....

Claudia Gomes, a friend of Rosa-Soares’s, described her as a good mother who spoiled her children. Rosa-Soares worked at an assisted-living community in Stoughton, said Gomes. Her last Facebook post was a picture of herself, smiling with her hand on her hip, clad in a furry vest and skinny jeans.

“She’s very nice, very sweet,” Gomes said. “She likes to help everybody.”

But, Gomes acknowledged, Rosa-Soares had troubles. She had talked in the past of suicide, but Gomes had told her she could not take her own life because she had two little girls. Rosa-Soares had divorced her husband, 9-year-old Marley Soares’s father, about a year ago, said Gomes, but continued to fight with him.

Court records in Brockton show that Rosa-Soares had a restraining order against Marley’s father, which he had allegedly violated twice early last year. Rosa-Soares also had a restraining order against the father of her other daughter, according to court records.

Neither man could be reached for comment Friday night.

“She’s been through a lot. She’s been stressed out,” Gomes said. “I’ve been talking to her, but I didn’t think it would come to this.”

Late last month, Gomes said, Rosa-Soares posted a message on Facebook saying someone close to her had threatened her.

“now he tries to Kill me,” read the post, which Gomes shared. “He said is going to make sure I DiE.”

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said he did not have information or comment about the Facebook post. He said that domestic violence “doesn’t appear to be something that’s occurred here.”

On Friday, crime-scene tape kept family and friends at a distance from the home, but at one point, wailing relatives walked through the police tape to stand in front of the house to hold each other and weep....
