Most folks know Saugus, a town split in half by Route 1, for an orange dinosaur, pu-pu platters and mai tais, and, of course, a 68-foot tall fake cactus.
But these days it’s politics — not the neon-lit highway — that divides Saugus.
For months, the town of 26,000 north of Boston has been roiled by political turmoil. It started two days before Halloween, when the Board of Selectmen voted 4-1 to fire the town manager. It could end on St. Patrick’s Day, when a special election to recall those four selectmen is scheduled.
The run-up to the election has been marked by reports of threats to selectmen, a whistle-blower lawsuit filed by the ousted town manager, and the resignation of two members of the Board of Registrars.
Now come suspicions of skulduggery....
