Verizon Calls Then Raises Eli Lilly

NEW YORK - Verizon Communications Inc., the second-largest US phone company, will cut more jobs as it grapples with a shrinking home-phone business and a sluggish economy, chief financial officer John Killian said yesterday.

The cuts, which will take place in the next few years, are in addition to 8,000 employee and contractor cuts the company had announced for the second half of 2009, Killian said in Marina del Rey, Calif.

Sales and profit margins will remain under pressure, Killian said....

NEW YORK - Seeking to cut costs and bring new drugs to market more quickly as its bestsellers go off-patent, Eli Lilly & Co. will eliminate 5,500 jobs over two years and reorganize into five business units. The Indianapolis company yesterday said that it will reduce its workforce by nearly 14 percent....

The company hopes to make some cuts through retirements and attrition, but could not say how many. It suggested most of the reductions will be in the United States.
