"Newspapers.... need government help to survive"
"Newspapers need cash now, they say" by Bloomberg News | September 25, 2009
NEW YORK - US newspaper publishers, suffering advertising and circulation drops, may need government help to survive as their cash reserves dwindle, the Newspaper Association of America told Congress yesterday.
“Newspapers need cash now,’’ John Sturm, president of the trade group, told the Joint Economic Committee in Washington.
WHO DOESN'T?
Maybe LYING TO US to PUSH POLITICAL AGENDAS and MASS-MURDERING WARS wasn't such a good thing after all, huh?
R.I.P., assholes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congress could help through proposals to allow newspapers to become nonprofit organizations or to alter how they are taxed for net operating losses, he said.
They ALREADY ARE NONPROFITS -- they LOSE MILLIONS a YEAR!!!!
Newspaper publishers have slashed jobs, cut pay, reduced the number sections, and raised newsstand prices to help cope with record declines in advertising sales....
Yeah, I know, because NOT ONLY does the PRINTED PAPER SUCK, but so do the censoring, "updating" websites.
NO ONE LIKES a LIAR, Glob!
New York Representative Carolyn Maloney, chairwoman of the committee, said the closings of newspapers in Seattle, Denver, and Tucson this year was “frightening’’ and imperiled an “important check on government.’’
Yeah, I GREENED THAT because SHE MEANS BLOGS NOW!
She CERTAINLY CAN NOT MEAN NEWSPAPERS!!!!!!
Let's FACE IT, AmeriKa -- your "newspapers" are government megaphones!
Publishers including The New York Times Co. and Hearst Corp. have said they are considering charging for news content on the Web, either through subscriptions or fees per article.
HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!

Yeah, DRIVE DOWN the TRAFFIC EVEN MORE because I AM the one SENDING THEM THERE (as well as being counted myself for each hit).
You want it that way, fine. I never buy or visit the NYT anymore, and I never will. Glob wants to go that way, fine. I will no longer need purchase the paper then (already skipped one day this week), and if that's the case, why visit the website? I'd rather read blogs.
The decline in industrywide ad sales accelerated last quarter to 29 percent from 28 percent in the first quarter, according to the Newspaper Association.
NO ONE LIKES A ____.
Combined sales of digital and print ads dropped to $6.82 billion, from $9.6 billion a year earlier.
Readers, that means WEB ADS on NEWSPAPER SITES ALSO DROPPED -- when THEY SHOULD BE GROWING, right? Isn't that where advertisers are headed? From print to web page? Or not?
Ahem, Globe: NO ONE LIKES A ____.
CHARGING US FOR IT is NOT THE ANSWER!
Maloney last week introduced a bill in the House that would allow newspapers to declare nonprofit status, a version of a Senate bill filed in March.
Oh, they will get it. Newspapers always give opinion spaces to elite s***ters, and this is part of the payback. Think they would turn off the microphone even if no one is listening? If nothing else, they get to hear their own voice.

New England's largest daily, right?
"New York Times may offer buyouts, will restore pay cuts
Umm, EXCUSE ME, Globe workers, but DIDN'T YOU JUST GET BENT OVER by the NYT?
NEW YORK - The New York Times told its main union this week that it is open to offering voluntary buyouts in a move that could avert additional layoffs as the newspaper seeks to further cut costs.
But they JUST MADE "$39.1 million" the LAST QUARTER!
The newspaper also guaranteed to restore pay for union members in January, after they had their salaries cut by 5 percent earlier in the year....
But not the nonunion?
Nonunion workers also had their pay cut by 5 percent; Times spokeswoman Diane McNulty declined to say whether their pay will be restored. The Times is owned by The New York Times Co., which also publishes The Boston Globe.

After losing $74.5 million in the first three months of the year, the Times Co. had a second-quarter profit of $39.1 million.
You Globe guys didn't get any pay restored, did you?
In its memo, the Guild said its meeting with the company’s flagship newspaper “took place in a spirit of cooperation.’’
The Guild said Times management signaled it was willing to offer voluntary buyouts, rather than lay off employees because members had “stepped up’’ by voting to accept the pay cut.
That's a little like rolling over after a missionary and letting them pooper-poke you, isn't it?
And EVEN the PREZ is weighing in on the self-destroying MSM:
"Obama: We Need To Bail Out Newspapers Or Blogs Will Run The World
Obama yesterday expressed concern at the sorry state of the news industry and said that he will look at a news paper bailout, because otherwise, blogs will take over the world, and that would be a threat to democracy, The Hill reports.
"I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding," he said.
PFFFFFTTTTTT!
We do MORE FACT-CHECKING than THEY DO, and I USE THEIR OWN WORDS to PROVE what OMITTING, OBFUSCATING, DISTORTING and DECEPTIVE POS they are!
But Obama is not paying attention to what is really going on. The corporate media tried to compete with the blogs by spending millions of dollars on slick websites, only to learn that it was never about whiz-bang technology but about getting the truth. What the blogs are doing in the US today was done with FAX machines in the USSR and with simple printing presses in tyrannies from Louie the 16th's to Charles the First, to Mussolini, to Ceausescu. Once the people know they are being lied to by the government, they will seek the truth wherever it is found and in whatever form it takes. At the moment, it is the blogs. Absent a brand new news entity staffed with trusted names from the blog-o-sphere, the TV networks and newspapers will be a long time gaining back the trust they lost by lying to the people about Saddam's "nookular" bombs.
Absent confession of the previous lies and a true act of contrition, this government will never regain the trust of the American people.
Trust arrives on foot but departs on horseback!
