"Scattering toads may be warning of an earthquake" by Jill Lawless, Associated Press | April 1, 2010

LONDON — When it comes to predicting earthquakes, toads — warts and all — may be an asset.

British researchers said yesterday that they observed a mass exodus of toads from a breeding site in Italy five days before a major tremor struck, suggesting the amphibians may be able to sense environmental changes, imperceptible to humans, that foretell a coming quake.

Most animals are more attuned then advanced, civilized us.

Since ancient times, anecdotes and folklore have linked unusual animal behavior to cataclysmic events such as earthquakes, but hard evidence has been scarce.

Never stopped the MSM before.

Heck, they start was without it.

A new study by researchers from the Open University is one of the first to document animal behavior before, during, and after an earthquake. The scientists were studying the common toad — bufo bufo — at a breeding colony in central Italy when they noticed a sharp decline in the number of animals at the site. Days later, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit, killing hundreds of people and badly damaging the town of L’Aquila.

Researcher Rachel Grant, the report’s lead author, said the findings suggested “that toads are able to detect pre-seismic cues such as the release of gases and charged particles, and use these as a form of earthquake early warning system. A day after the earthquake, they all started coming back.’’

Wish we had one, don't you?

"7.2-level quake strikes in Mexico, shakes Southwest" by Associated Press | April 5, 2010

TIJUANA, Mexico — One of the strongest earthquakes to hit Southern California in decades shook millions of people in two countries and three states yesterday, swaying buildings from Los Angeles to Phoenix to Las Vegas. At least two people in Mexico were killed, and others were feared trapped in their homes.

The 7.2-magnitude quake struck at 3:40 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time about 20 miles southeast of the border city of Mexicali, Mexico, according to the US Geological Survey. Three aftershocks of magnitudes 5.1, 4.5, and 4.3 followed within the hour....

No tsunami warning was issued. The quake was centered in an area that has been seismically active lately but until yesterday the earthquakes had been minor. The main quake was initially reported as magnitude-6.9. The updated magnitude was still an estimate, but if it holds it would be California’s largest temblor since the 7.3-magnitude Landers quake hit in 1992, Jones said.

The earthquake rattled buildings on the west side of Los Angeles and in the San Fernando Valley, and strong shaking also was reported across parts of Arizona and Nevada.

"Amid aftershocks, US and Mexico survey quake’s toll; Cities on border suffer damage, but few deaths" by Elliot Spagat, Associated Press | April 6, 2010

MEXICALI, Mexico — Aftershocks rattled the southwest Mexico-US border yesterday morning after a major earthquake killed two people, blacked out cities, and forced the evacuation of hospitals and nursing homes.

Sunday’s 7.2-magnitude quake, centered just south of the US border near Mexicali, was one of the strongest to hit the region in decades, shaking at least 20 million people. Scientists measured about 100 aftershocks early yesterday, said seismologist Kate Hutton at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. The quake had a shallow depth, 6 miles.

But the human toll was minimal in large part because the energy from the quake moved northwest of Mexicali toward a less populated area, said Jessica Sigala, a geophysicist from the US Geological Survey. “We were just kind of lucky that the energy went the other way,’’ Sigala said. “With every earthquake, the earth starts moving a certain direction. It started south of Mexicali and the rupture moved northwest.’’

Yeah, this time.

"Chile quake toll at 432 dead, 98 lost" by Associated Press | April 1, 2010

SANTIAGO — Chilean officials have confirmed 432 people dead and 98 missing after February’s earthquake and tsunami.

The death toll has fluctuated in past weeks as officials struggle to find, identify, and count victims across the region amid a change in government leadership.

The report delivered Tuesday is the latest but probably not the last attempt.

In the first week after the Feb. 27 quake, the estimated death toll rose above 800 because of double-counting by government agencies.

By the March 11 inauguration, the outgoing government had set the count below 500.

The new administration has continued to refine the figure as remains are identified and causes of death are confirmed.
