Around New England: Rhode Island Classrooms and Casinos

"
R.I. teachers subdued after agreement" by Brian MacQuarrie, Globe Staff | May 18, 2010

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. — In a dramatic conclusion to four months of acrimony, teachers in this struggling city conceded nearly everything administrators had demanded in return for the jobs of 93 faculty, management, and staff at beleaguered Central Falls High School....

George McLaughlin, a guidance counselor, said teachers are grateful that an accord was reached. When asked to elaborate, McLaughlin replied, “We’re glad we’re going to be able to eat.’’

Do they ever think "I should have been a banker or war looter?"

Many students at the school seemed buoyed by the agreement, which means that teachers will not be required to reapply for their jobs in the fall. The prospect of a completely new staff at Central Falls High had attracted more than 700 applicants from a tough national market for teachers.

“It’s good because they’re good teachers,’’ said Miguel Vazquez, 16, a junior. “It’s the students who slack off. We need a little more motivation.’’

Have they taught you about scapegoats yet?

Belmira Dalomba, 18, who graduated from the high school last year, said the teachers are handicapped by uninterested students and are not the reason for the school’s chronically low test scores.

“If the students don’t care, why should the teachers care,’’ asked Dalomba, who credited her high school teachers for the motivation to attend Paine College in Georgia. “If the teachers see you’re not willing to work, they’re not going to force you.’’

But Jason Medina, a 17-year-old junior, greeted the labor agreement with a shrug.

“Personally, I really don’t care,’’ Medina said. “As long as I get my education, it’s fine with me.’’

Isn't that just what they are talking about?

"New plan to allow casinos in R.I.; Bill avoids need for amendment" by Eric Tucker, Associated Press | June 9, 2010

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island voters would decide whether to expand gambling in their state by allowing its two slot machine parlors to become full-scale casinos, under a bill debated yesterday.

Again?

The bill before the House Finance Committee seeks a referendum on whether to allow casino gambling at Twin River in Lincoln and at Newport Grand. The two parlors offer video lottery terminals but not the live blackjack, poker, and craps games found at traditional casinos....

Haven't you guys learned anything?

The bill’s supporters say that gambling would spur economic development in the fiscally slumping state. They also say it is important to keep pace with neighboring states, such as Connecticut, where the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos are major destinations, and Massachusetts, where lawmakers yesterday debated a proposal to license three casinos....

I'm tired of being browbeaten with the lie of a promise.

In 2006, voters rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have allowed the Narragansett Indian tribe to join with Harrah’s Entertainment to open a casino in West Warwick.

Just wondering what is it about democracy that these groups don’t understand?’’

Barry Flynn, a Newport resident, urged the committee to reject the legislation, pointing out that voters have spurned previous efforts to expand gambling.

He probably feels like I do.

He compared casino proponents to children who badger their parents so they can get what they want.

Yeah, they do seem to share a certainly quality as well as religious outlook.

And look at what happens when they get their own country, huh?

“It’s your responsibility to be grown-ups now and follow the will of the people as stated,’’ Flynn told the committee.

Did a POLITICIAN just say THAT?

Pinch me, will you, readers; I must still be asleep!

And my printed paper cut it there?

“They’re hoping that they’re going to just bore the state voters into some kind of catatonia or lack of interest, and then it’ll get passed eventually. That’s what I’m afraid you’re going to do.’’

So what else is the R.I. legislooture working on?

"OK called unlikely for liquor sampling bill

A bill pending in the Rhode Island General Assembly would allow liquor store customers to conduct taste tests before making a purchase. The bill would allow liquor stores to offer customers up to three samples of vodka, gin, or other distilled spirits so people could taste a particular brand before deciding whether to buy. The sponsor of the measure calls its chances for passage slight, with the legislative session waning and lawmakers facing more pressing concerns. (AP)."

Yup, WASTING YOUR TAXPAYER DIME because they CAN'T FIX ANYTHING because they all are beholden to banks first and foremost!

I'll text you my response on the way to the party.

"Police blame crash on texting, speeding

A Pawtucket man was injured after he lost control of his car while texting and speeding on Interstate 95 north off Exit 1, State Police said. Joseph F. Brito Jr., 26, was speeding at around 3 a.m. yesterday when his car skidded across three travel lanes and struck a Jersey barrier, police said. The car then struck a tree. Police say Brito was listed in stable but guarded condition at Rhode Island Hospital. He was charged with texting while driving, failing to wear a seat belt, and other charges. It was not known whether he is represented by a lawyer. (AP)

Put the F***ING PHONE DOWN (at 3 in the morning, glug-glug?)
