"Man changing flat tire is struck by SUV
A Holyoke man was seriously injured early yesterday morning after a sport utility vehicle struck him while he was standing next to a State Police cruiser, according to State Police. A trooper had pulled over to the breakdown lane of Interstate 391 northbound near Exit 4 in Chicopee to help the man attend to a flat tire. The man, whose name was not released, was standing by the trooper’s window at about 2:30 a.m. when the SUV swerved into the lane, hitting the man and the cruiser. The driver of the light-colored vehicle then drove away, State Police said. The trooper was not injured."

"Warrant issued in youth’s death at party
Holyoke police say they have identified a suspect in the weekend shooting of a 16-year-old. Chief Anthony Scott said yesterday that a warrant has been issued for Julio Reyes-Roman, 20, who is wanted in the slaying of Jean Carlos Laguer. Laguer, who was shot in the back, had come to the defense of his brother, who had been beaten unconscious, police said (AP)."

"Power company faces fine for water runoff
A coal-fired power station is facing federal fines of more than $177,000 in the discharge of muddy storm water and other pollutants into the Connecticut River. The Environmental Protection Agency says Mount Tom Generating Co. in Holyoke violated its federally issued permit by exceeding permit discharge limits over a five-month period during construction work. The EPA says rainwater running off construction sites can carry sediments, oil, and other pollutants that can contaminate streams, ponds, and rivers, possibly contributing the die-off of fish, toxic algae blooms, contamination of shellfish beds, and beach closings."
Oh, first the nuke plant upriver leaks radiation into the river and downriver (as the company lies about it and the newspaper minimize it).... but worry about global warming as you freeze your ass off this fall, New Englander!
