PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Health workers feared a surge of cholera in the shantytowns and muddy tent camps of Haiti’s capital as suspected cases piled up yesterday and at least three cases were confirmed to have originated in the overcrowded city.
Gee, just a few weeks ago an article said the crisis was easing.
And I am really beginning to get suspicious of how the germ was introduced.

Hundreds of people suffered the cholera symptoms of fever and diarrhea in hospitals and shacks built along the putrid waste canals of slums like Cite Soleil and Martissant....
Following Monday’s confirmation that a 3-year-old boy from a tent camp near Cite Soleil had contracted the disease before Oct. 31 without leaving the capital, the Pan-American Health Organization said the epidemic’s spread from river towns in the countryside to the nation’s primary urban center was a dangerous development....
The implication being that the Haitians brought this on themselves.
Damage to Port-au-Prince’s already miserable pre-earthquake sanitation and drinking water systems make the city “ripe for the rapid spread of cholera,’’ Dr. Jon K. Andrus, the organization’s deputy director, told reporters.
Then HOW COME there had BEEN NONE in OVER 50 YEARS?!!

Port-au-Prince is estimated to be home to between 2.5 million and 3 million people, about half of whom have been living in homeless encampments since the Jan. 12 earthquake ravaged the capital.

A confirmed case of cholera had never been seen in this Caribbean country before last month, when it suddenly killed several dozen people and spread across the agricultural heartland of the Artibonite Valley.

It has killed at least 580 people and hospitalized more than 9,500, with confirmed cases across the entire northern two-thirds of the country. Dozens of cases are rumored throughout the south.

Yesterday, Haiti’s Healthy Ministry said the disease has become a threat to the entire nation of 10 million people.
The disease, primarily spread when infected fecal matter contaminates food or water, is preventable and treatable, mainly by rehydrating the sick with safe water or intravenous fluids and sometimes using antibiotics.
And if you don't reach them in time it is a nasty and awful end.
But decades of failing infrastructure have left millions without access to clean water, sanitation, or medical care.
How can that be with so many globalist non-profits down there doing such good work?
I mean, that's all we heard after the earthquake earlier this year.

The funds will be used by the UN and non-governmental organizations to bring in additional doctors, medicines, and water-purification equipment to treat up to 200,000 people who could show cholera symptoms ranging from mild diarrhea to severe dehydration, the global body said.
“We absolutely need this money as soon as possible,’’ said Elisabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the UN humanitarian office.

She told reporters in Geneva that the funds need to be provided quickly, “otherwise all our efforts can be outrun by the epidemic.’’
At least 11,125 cases of cholera have been confirmed in five of Haiti’s 10 districts since the outbreak began last month. Ten deaths and 278 cases have occurred in Port-au-Prince.
The epidemic isn’t likely to end soon, the World Health Organization said yesterday....
The cause of the outbreak in Haiti is still unknown.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Researchers should determine whether United Nations peacekeepers were the source of a deadly outbreak of cholera in Haiti, two public health specialists, including a UN official, said yesterday.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the strain of cholera that has killed at least 442 people the past three weeks matches strains found in South Asia. The CDC, World Health Organization, and United Nations say it is not possible to pinpoint the source and investigating further would distract from efforts to fight the disease.

Death occurs when patients go into shock from extreme dehydration. The epidemic has diverted resources needed for the expected strike of a hurricane this week, and could spread further if there is flooding.
Suspicions that the Nepalese base could have been a source of the infection intensified Monday after the CDC revealed the strain in Haiti matches those found in South Asia, including Nepal.
But nothing has been proven conclusively, and the case remains politically charged and diplomatically sensitive.
Why should the SEARCH for TRUTH be impacted by ANY OF THOSE?

Laurie Garrett, senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, said that the disease was imported to Haiti but that it is not clear by whom or how. She said the epidemic will contain lessons for humanitarian relief work and disaster relief around the world.

John Mekalanos, a cholera specialist and chairman of Harvard University’s microbiology department, also cast doubt on UN military tests released this week that showed no sign of cholera.
They sound like the U.S. government that said all the Gulf oil was gone.
The tests were taken from leaking water and an underground waste container at the base a week after the epidemic was noted and processed in the Dominican Republic, UN spokesman Vincenzo Pugliese said.
Mekalanos said that it is difficult to accurately isolate cholera in environmental samples and that false negatives are common.
The Nepalese troops were not tested for cholera before their deployment if they did not have symptoms.

Radio Kiskeya and Radio Caraibes reported that UN soldiers and Haitian police fired tear gas and projectiles to disperse at least 1,000 protesters at the Nepalese base. Joseph said at least three people were injured by Haitian police.

Cholera is transmitted by feces and can easily be prevented if people have access to safe drinking water and can regularly wash their hands.

No formal or independent investigation has taken place despite calls from Haitian human rights groups and US health care specialists.

The protests left at least two people dead. A demonstrator was shot dead by a UN peacekeeper during an exchange of gunfire in Quartier Morin, near Haiti’s second-largest city of Cap-Haitien, the United Nations mission said. It said it was investigating the shooting but asserted the soldier acted in self-defense.
