Globe's Five College Hangover

What did I do last night?

Oh, yeah:

"Hampshire College president resigning

Hampshire College president Ralph Hexter announced yesterday that he intends to resign. College officials said the transition details are being worked out. Hexter, Hampshire’s fifth president, told the board of trustees that it is the right point in his career to plan a transition. A scholar of classics and comparative literature, Hexter arrived at Hampshire in 2005 from the University of California, Berkeley. During his presidency, he completed a capital campaign, adding a new wing to the college’s center for film, photography, and video that received a LEED gold certification for green buildings, said Sigmund Roos, chairman of the board of trustees."

"Hampshire College picks acting president

Hampshire College has appointed a philosophy professor at the Amherst school as acting president. Marlene Gerber Fried, who also is director of the Civil Liberties and Public Policy program at the school, will serve until July 1, when a new president is expected to be appointed. President Ralph Hexter said this month that he will step down after more than four years in the post. Gerber Fried has been at Hampshire College since 1986. Her scholarship and teaching have focused on public policy and abortion rights (AP)."

"Alcohol arrests are rising at UMass

Campus police say there has been an increase in the number of alcohol-related arrests and citations at the University of Massachusetts in the past two years. But it is not because students are drinking more, police say, but rather because officers are enforcing the law more vigorously.

That must be it; the kids are drunk.

At least it is booze and not power and Palestinian blood.

"Film to explore Dickinson’s scientific side

A new documentary explores the scientific side of the famed 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson. The Emily Dickinson Museum says the one-hour film “Seeing New Englandly’’ will get its first screening tomorrow night at Amherst Cinema. The documentary features a number of poems and passages that reflect Dickinson’s fascination with the natural world, including subjects such as the northern lights, volcanic eruptions, and unusual New England weather. Dickinson was born in Amherst and lived a mostly reclusive life there."

Yeah, she rarely left her room.
