"Summit calls for doubling tiger population" by Associated Press / November 22, 2010

ST. PETERSBURG — Wild tigers could become extinct in 12 years if countries where they still roam fail to take quick action to protect their habitats and step up the fight against poaching, global wildlife officials said at a summit convened to discuss the animals yesterday.

The World Wildlife Fund and other groups said that only about 3,200 tigers remain in the wild, a dramatic plunge from an estimated 100,000 a century ago.

James Leape, director general of the World Wildlife Fund, told the meeting in St. Petersburg that if the protective measures aren’t taken, tigers may disappear by 2022.

Isn't this the same crowd that said the glaciers were disappearing due to the global warming fraud (record-cold winters are not covered in my agenda-pushing newspaper, you see).

Their habitat is being destroyed by forest cutting and construction, and they are a valuable trophy for poachers who want skins and body parts prized in Chinese traditional medicine....

They seem to be responsible for everything wrong in the world lately.

The program aims to protect tiger habitats; eradicate poaching, smuggling, and illegal trade of tigers and their parts; and create incentives for local communities to engage them in helping protect the big cats.

I have a love for cats since my friend's little cat loves taking naps in my lap; however, I wouldn't want to get friendly with the big guys.

"13 countries sign pact to preserve tigers" by Associated Press / November 24, 2010

ST. PETERSBURG — Officials from the 13 countries where tigers live in the wild signed a declaration yesterday aimed at saving the iconic big cats from extinction.

The new accord stipulates that the nations will strive to double the tiger population by 2022 and crack down on poaching and illicit trade in tiger pelts and body parts.

Tigers once roamed most of Eurasia from the Tigris River to Siberia and Indonesia....

Russia’s Far East is home to Siberian tigers, the largest tiger subspecies. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has bolstered his image by posing with a cuddly cub and placing a tracking collar on a full-grown female.

And Obama pardons a ceremonial turkey for the cameras before the White House chef shoves some poor sucker into the oven.  What's your point, agenda-pushing media?

The number of tigers worldwide has plunged some 95 percent over the past century. The Global Tiger Recovery Program estimates that the 13 countries will need about $350 million in outside funding in the first five years of the 12-year plan.

Many of the countries with tigers, such as Laos, Bangladesh, and Nepal, are impoverished, and saving tigers may depend on sizable donations from the West....

Then I would say their chances are slim.  Ask the Haitians where the money is.
