So says the AmeriKan military:
"NATO denies it plans raids in Pakistan; Calls report false; US officials say it’s not approved" Patrick Quinn, Associated Press / December 22, 2010
KABUL — The US-led coalition in Afghanistan yesterday denied a report that American forces are pushing to expand special operations raids into tribal areas of neighboring Pakistan....
US Rear Admiral Gregory Smith, NATO’s deputy chief of communications, said there was no truth to the report published in The New York Times.
Which liar do you want to believe?
Citing unnamed American officials in Washington, the Times reported on its website late Monday that US military commanders believe special operations forces could capture militants for interrogation, bringing in an intelligence windfall.
“There is absolutely no truth to reporting in The New York Times,’’ Smith said....

Yup, no truth to the Times -- which is why I never vist or read them.
Analysts and Afghan government officials have accused Pakistan of protecting the Al Qaeda-affiliated Haqqani as a potential ally that could be of use after the Americans and their coalition partners leave Afghanistan.
Who?
"Haqqani.... credited with introducing suicide bombing to the region.... cultivated as a "unilateral" asset of the CIA and received tens of thousands of dollars in cash for his work.... He may have had a role in expediting the escape of Osama Bin Laden.... In July 2008, CIA officials confronted Pakistan officials with evidence of ties between Inter-Services Intelligence and Haqqani. Haqqani has been accused of involvement in the 2008 Indian embassy bombing in Kabul.... The Haqqani Network is based in Pakistan and is believed to have links to Al Qaeda."
Whose ally?

The newspaper report said that Afghan militias backed by the CIA have in recent years carried out a number of secret missions into Pakistan....
Yes, never mind the contractors or AmeriKan special forces running across the border.
What is with the deception, NYT?

This article never appeared in my printed paper:
"US military seeks to expand raids into Pakistani tribal areas; Sense of urgency as deadline nears" by Mark Mazzetti and Dexter Filkins, New York Times / December 21, 2010
WASHINGTON — Senior US military commanders in Afghanistan are pushing for an expanded campaign of Special Operations ground raids across the border into Pakistan’s tribal areas....
Which implies they were ALREADY DOING IT!
Military and political leaders say a renewed sense of urgency has taken hold as the deadline approaches for the Obama administration to begin withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan.
Then there is no urgency because we are not leaving.
Even with the risks, military commanders say that using US Special Operations troops could bring an intelligence windfall if militants were captured, brought back into Afghanistan, and interrogated....
And torture.
The decision to expand US military activity in Pakistan, which would almost certainly have to be approved by President Obama, would amount to the opening of a new front in the nine-year-old war....

I don't know; I think the Times might be telling the truth on this one.
