"Advocates hit Obama student loan proposal" by Janet Lorin | Bloomberg News, April 12, 2013
NEW YORK — President Obama’s budget proposal tying student loan interest rates to the market is drawing criticism from education advocates because there’s no cap to protect borrowers when rates climb.
While the cost of borrowing in general today is low, there is a long-term risk for students, said Jennifer Mishory, deputy director of Young Invincibles, a Washington nonprofit that advocates for the interests of 18- to 34-year-olds.
‘‘There must be a cap on how high those rates could go, otherwise students could be facing much higher debt levels and could be deterred from even going to school at all under Obama’s plan,’’ Mishory said....

"Parents get competitive on college" by Beth Teitell | Globe Staff, April 12, 2013
With elite schools accepting record low percentages of applicants for the coming school year and so-called “safety schools” no longer the safe bets they used to be, getting into the “right” college has never been more competitive — a challenge not just for students, but for a certain type of overinvested parent....

No one wants to go there.
The boasting bump in some circles comes at a time when many parents and students do not have the luxury to stress about prestige schools. With competition intense, financial aid limited, lower and middle-income families are scrambling to find a school that is affordable and a good fit—not one that wows on Facebook....
That's odd. I was told Harvard and the like were increasing aid.
But hey, whatever advances the narrative, right?
But with the poor economy and student debt ramping up the importance of a marketable education, and a kid-obsessed society that makes parents take children’s success and failure as their very own, a laid-back approach can be hard to find....
What poor economy? I've been told recovery for years, you f***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for the marketable skills, I suppose that's why they are bringing all sorts of foreign labor over here to do high-tech and other work Americans allegedly don't want.
