Did You Forget About Yemen?

Once the terror scare passed the Globe went back to ignoring Yemen, save for these:

"UK, German embassies reopen in Yemen" Associated Press, August 19, 2013

SANA, Yemen — The United Kingdom and Germany have reopened their embassies in Yemen’s capital, Sana, after being closed for about two weeks due to a terrorism threat....

The United States closed 19 of its diplomatic missions in the Middle East and Africa after it intercepted a message between Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahri and Yemen’s Al Qaeda offshoot about plans for a major attack. The State Department has reopened all the posts except its Sana embassy.

Translation: the terror scare flopped -- for obvious reasons.

After the secret message was intercepted, security was beefed up in Sana, particularly around embassies.

Washington considers the local Al Qaeda branch, also known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, to be the world’s most active.

An accelerated use of drone strikes in Yemen under President Obama and a US-backed offensive last year drove militants from territory they had seized a year earlier during Yemen’s political turmoil amid the Arab Spring.

There have been nine suspected US drone strikes in Yemen since July 27.

The drone attacks in that two-week period have killed 38 suspected militants in Yemen.

More blood on Obomber's hands, and list of souls on the war crimes charges.

Last week, Al Qaeda militants killed three Yemeni soldiers in the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula in what the military said was an attempt to capture a city.

The commander of the fourth military region, Major General Mahmoud el-Subaihi, said his forces used tanks to surround about 70 militants who are taking cover in residential homes in the provincial capital city of Hawtah in Lahj province.

Dozens of families from the impoverished city fled because of violence there.

You mean Yemen has a refugee problem?

I have been under the impression that it was only the Syrian situation that is serious.

"Bombing strikes Yemen air force bus, killing 3" Associated Press, August 26, 2013

SANA, Yemen — A bomb probably hidden on a bus carrying high-ranking Yemeni air force personnel exploded Sunday in the capital, killing three people in a country fighting an Al Qaeda affiliate, officials said.

The explosion in Sana came as Al Qaeda’s Yemen branch posted a new video message saying killings in Muslim nations only act as a ‘‘stimulus’’ to draw more into fighting as militants.

Pffft!

The bombing wounded 23 people riding in the minibus, including five in critical condition with amputated arms or legs, said Colonel Mahdi al-Aidarous, an air force spokesman. Among those wounded were 13 majors, lieutenant-colonels, and colonels, the Defense Ministry said.

The colonel said the bus was heading to air force headquarters when the blast went off. He said it probably originated from inside the vehicle. The official SABA news agency later quoted an air force statement as saying that the explosive was stuck under the bus.

A "sticky IED?"

What a gift, huh?

Private television stations showed images of a damaged bus with blown-out windows and blood-stained doors. Security forces collected evidence.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Yemen’s government is battling militants linked to Al Qaeda who regularly target the country’s military.

Linked to who?

Amid a global alert about terrorism earlier this month, the United States evacuated its diplomatic staff from Yemen’s capital.

What the Globe missed:

Drone strikes in Yemen kill 6

What does that bring the death toll to now, 40 for this recent round of drone strikes?
