WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. was taken to the hospital Thursday after experiencing faintness and shortness of breath during a staff meeting, the Justice Department said.
In a statement to reporters, the department said the trip, tests, and brief observation were precautionary. He was released in the early afternoon and was resting at home.
Holder was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He made jokes with paramedics on the ambulance ride to the hospital.
Holder, 63, has served as attorney general since President Obama took office in 2009. He is expected to step down at some point this year.
In a legal career that has spanned five decades, Holder has served as a corruption prosecutor, judge, US attorney, and both of the top two jobs at the Justice Department.
Holder has been the Obama administration’s leading voice on civil rights issues, most notably the administration’s campaigns for gay rights and against laws requiring voters to show identification at the polls. Studies show minorities and the poor are disproportionately affected by such laws.
Holder is active and generally in good health. He was supposed to play basketball this weekend.

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday called the increase in heroin-related deaths an ‘‘urgent and growing public health crisis’’ and said first responders should carry with them a drug that can reverse the effects of an overdose.
The video message posted on the Justice Department’s website reflects the federal government’s concern about the growing prevalence of heroin and prescription painkillers.
The number of overdose deaths involving heroin increased by 45 percent between 2006 and 2010, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and several state governors have recently drawn attention to the impact of heroin abuse in their communities.
‘‘Addiction to heroin and other opiates, including certain prescription pain-killers, is impacting the lives of Americans in every state, in every region, and from every background and walk of life — and all too often, with deadly results,’’ Holder said in the message.
The attorney general’s support for an antidote that could be used to rescue overdosing drug users mirrors the position of the White House drug policy office....

One who is too heavily invested in the subject
matter to be objective, would come to think I have some kind of a hardon for
the Gay Community (now there’s an interesting turn of a phrase.) when I have
most enjoyably socialized with them all my adult life and count some number of them
as friends.
It seems that these days there is a new kind of gay running
around, programmed to the agenda and with a kind of exclusivity elitism
that I
haven’t seen before. They're kind of like backdoor sexual stormtroopers.
The gays I know have zero interest in gay marriage, or any
of the Tribe issues that are shoehorned into the program. It should come
as no
surprise that Tel Aviv is the top tourist spot for gays in the world,
surpassing even New York and San FranCrisco. It really makes you wonder about that place, especially when you got things like this. There’s a telling little soundbite in there
that says, “Despite the fact that Ultra-Orthodox Jews make up ten percent of
Israel’s eight-million strong population, the majority of them refuse to work,
and instead study full-time in religious institutions.” It shouldn't be hard to
guess who pays for that. It’s the same people who provide the canon fodder for their
