NEW YORK — In a decision setting a significant human rights precedent, an immigration appeals court has ruled that a former defense minister of El Salvador, a close ally of Washington during the civil war there in the 1980s, can be deported from the United States because he participated in or concealed torture and murder by his troops.
That is a HUGE RULING, for it means AmeriKan officials can be held accountable!
The decision, published Wednesday by the Board of Immigration Appeals in the case of General Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova, found that he had a direct role in the abuse and killings of civilians, including the rape and murder of four American churchwomen in December 1980, because of his “command responsibility” as the top military officer.
It considered is a major statement by the highest immigration court, interpreting a central issue in a rights law passed in 2004.
Vides is the highest-ranking official to be prosecuted under the command provisions of the statute. Vides, 77, now lives in Florida.

CHICAGO — An Illinois Army National Guard soldier vowed to bring ‘‘the flames of war to the heart’’ of America if he was unable to get to the Middle East to join the Islamic State group, and his cousin bragged that he could kill at least 150 people in a terrorist attack in the United States, federal prosecutors said Thursday in announcing their arrests.
This is smelling like a bs psyop, and interesting choice of numbers and total considering what happened in Kenya after the Iran nuclear deal was sealed.
Hasan R. Edmonds, the 22-year-old guardsman, was arrested Wednesday night at Chicago Midway International Airport while trying to board a plane for the first leg of a journey that eventually would have taken him to Egypt.
Jonas M. Edmonds, 29, was arrested earlier that day at his home, the US attorney’s office in Chicago said. Both men are US citizens from the Chicago suburb of Aurora.
According to an unsealed federal complaint, Jonas Edmonds planned to carry out a US attack after Hasan Edmonds left the country.
The complaint said they contemplated an armed attack against a US military facility in northern Illinois where Hasan Edmonds had trained.
In Internet messages to an undercover FBI agent in January, Hasan Edmonds said that if he was unable to make it to the Middle East, he would help bring ‘‘the flames of war to the heart’’ of America and ‘‘cause as much damage and mayhem as possible,’’ prosecutors have alleged.

On Tuesday, the cousins drove to a military installation with an undercover agent to discuss an attack, according to the complaint, which does not name the facility.

CHICAGO — Former US representative Jesse Jackson Jr. left an Alabama federal prison early Thursday bound for a halfway house, where he begins his transition back into society two years after pleading guilty to spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal items.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, speaking by phone shortly after picking up his 50-year-old son, described his release from the minimum-security federal prison camp at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala., as a ‘‘joyous reunion.’’ He added that the younger Jackson was doing ‘‘very well.’’

It wasn’t immediately clear if Jackson, an Illinois Democrat, would live at a halfway house for the remainder of his 2½-year term.
Another possibility, according to US Bureau of Prison policy, is that he serve out his sentence under home confinement.
A Bureau of Prisons spokesman in Washington, D.C., also later confirmed that Jackson had left the Alabama lockup.
At some point after Jackson is officially no longer a federal prisoner, his wife, Sandra, must serve out her punishment on a related conviction.

NAIROBI — Masked al-Shabab militants stormed dormitories at a university in eastern Kenya early Thursday, killing at least 147 people in the worst terror attack on Kenyan soil since the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi in 1998, officials said.

Al-Shabab considers Kenya an enemy in part because the country sent troops to Somalia in 2011 to fight the group. Kenyan troops remain stationed there as part of an African Union mission.
U.S. drone strikes had recently appeared to be weakening the group, which has also lost territory within Somalia. American troops have been training African Union soldiers to fight al-Shabab terrorists. Western sanctions are also thought to have struck a blow to the group’s finances.
Last year, President Obama pointed to the U.S. strategy in Somalia as an example of a successful counterterrorism campaign. He called it a “strategy of taking out terrorists who threaten us, while supporting partners on the front lines.”

Now that the war crimes charges have been dropped Obama can visit the place where he was born.
But Thursday’s attack proved that al-Shabab still has the capacity to strike in the region, and with deadly effect.
Kenya’s border with Somalia is vast and largely unguarded. Attacks on many targets, particularly in rural parts of Kenya, are difficult to prevent. The Garissa campus had little protection, despite recent security alerts at universities across the country.
This is starting to stink to high heaven. So what was it, another drill?
Kenya is a key U.S. ally in the region, a product of its role in combating terrorism as well as its growing economy and prominence in East African geopolitics.
“The United States stands with the people of Kenya, who will not be intimidated by such cowardly attacks,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Thursday.

Students at Garissa reported seeing notices warning of a possible attack on the campus. “As it was April 1, we just thought that it was fooling,” one student said.

Garissa University College, which opened in 2011, according to its Web site, is the first and only public university in North Eastern Province.

NEW YORK — One of the two New York women who were arrested Thursday on charges of plotting a Boston Marathon-type attack told an undercover officer that the Marathon bombers had made a mistake in attacking regular people, according to a criminal complaint.
This has gone beyond the realm of silliness to rank rot propaganda.
Noelle Velentzas said that “it is better to go for the enemy directly rather than the people who are getting drunk or running in a marathon,” the complaint said. “Velentzas stated that it would be better to attack ‘the head, the neck, the shoulders’ of the ‘snake’ (i.e., enemy), referring to those who would harm Muslims, but not ‘the tail.’”
Velentzas, 28, had been ‘‘obsessed with pressure cookers since the Boston Marathon attacks in 2013’’ and made jokes alluding to explosives after receiving one as a gift, according to the complaint and affidavit filed in support of arrest warrants.
In September 2014, when the undercover officer and Velentzas were driving in New York, Velentzas saw a pressure cooker in a hardware store window and said, “Why the hell is the hardware store sell [sic] the pressure cooker? ... The devil is [expletive deleted] with me,” the complaint said.
The complaint unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn names Velentzas and her former roommate, Asia Siddiqui, 31, as the targets of an undercover investigation into a thwarted homegrown plot to build a homemade bomb and wage violent jihad.

The women, both from Queens, were held without bail after a brief court appearance Thursday where they spoke only to say they understood the charges against them. Velentzas wore a hijab and a dark dress, and Siddiqui wore a green T-shirt with a long-sleeved black shirt underneath and a long skirt.

‘‘My client will enter a plea of not guilty, if and when there is an indictment. I know it’s a serious case, but we’re going to fight it out in court,’’ said Siddiqui’s lawyer, Thomas Dunn. Velentzas’ attorney had no comment.
The women repeatedly expressed support for violent jihad during conversations with the undercover officer, who secretly recorded them, according to the complaint.
In 2009, Siddiqui, 31, wrote a poem in a magazine published by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula that declared there is ‘‘no excuse to sit back and wait — for the skies rain martyrdom,’’ investigators wrote in court papers. Velentzas, 28, called Osama bin Laden one of her heroes and said she and Siddiqui were ‘‘citizens of the Islamic State,’’ they said.

Since 2014, the pair plotted to build an explosive device to use in a terrorist attack on American soil, the complaint said. They ‘‘researched and acquired some of the components of a car bomb, like the one used in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; a fertilizer bomb, like the one used in the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City; and a pressure cooker bomb, like the one used in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing,’’ authorities wrote.

After two New York City police officers were gunned down in a patrol car in December, Velentzas told an undercover officer that the deaths showed it was easy to kill a police officer, according to the complaint. She said killing an officer was easier than buying food ‘‘because sometimes one has to wait in line to buy food,’’ according to the complaint.

After the undercover officer mentioned that 25,000 officers had turned out for the first of the funerals for the two officers, Velentzas ‘‘complimented’’ the undercover agent for coming up with an attractive target and considered whether the other funeral was an appropriate target, according to the complaint.

The complaint suggested that authorities decided to make the arrests after Siddiqui came into ‘‘possession of multiple propane gas tanks, as well as instructions for how to transform propane tanks into explosive devices,’’ and told the undercover she was ‘‘disinclined’’ to talk about her plans.
During a search of the defendants’ homes early Thursday, agents recovered items including three gas tanks, a pressure cooker, fertilizer, handwritten notes on recipes for bomb making and jihadist literature, court papers say. They also found two machetes and two daggers.
Who planted all that?
‘‘It is very, very important to note: there was never any imminent threat to our fellow New Yorkers,’’ Mayor Bill de Blasio said when asked about the case. The plot, he added, ‘‘was undercut before it could turn into something dangerous.’’

Neighbors of Siddiqui said she and her brother lived in the basement of a red-brick three floor house, owned by their parents, who did not live there.
‘‘She was quiet, and I never thought she could do this,’’ said Mohammad Shahidul Haque, a retired hospital lab tech.
