James Leape, director general of the World Wildlife Fund, told the meeting in St. Petersburg that if the protective measures aren’t taken, tigers may disappear by 2022.
Isn't this the same crowd that said the glaciers were disappearing due to the global warming fraud (record-cold winters are not covered in my agenda-pushing newspaper, you see).
Their habitat is being destroyed by forest cutting and construction, and they are a valuable trophy for poachers who want skins and body parts prized in Chinese traditional medicine....

The number of tigers worldwide has plunged some 95 percent over the past century. The Global Tiger Recovery Program estimates that the 13 countries will need about $350 million in outside funding in the first five years of the 12-year plan.
Many of the countries with tigers, such as Laos, Bangladesh, and Nepal, are impoverished, and saving tigers may depend on sizable donations from the West....
Then I would say their chances are slim. Ask the Haitians where the money is.

Karzai called on the United States to reduce military operations and end special operation raids that have killed or captured hundreds of Taliban commanders.
Petraeus, the top US and NATO commander in Afghanistan, was astonished and disappointed by the views Karzai expressed in the interview Saturday, according to Afghan and US officials....
In calling for an end to NATO night raids — which are controversial in Afghanistan because of the considerable risk of civilian casualties — Karzai struck at the heart of Petraeus’s counterinsurgency strategy....

Karzai called on the United States to reduce military operations and end special operation raids that have killed or captured hundreds of Taliban commanders.
Petraeus, the top US and NATO commander in Afghanistan, was astonished and disappointed by the views Karzai expressed in the interview Saturday, according to Afghan and US officials....
In calling for an end to NATO night raids — which are controversial in Afghanistan because of the considerable risk of civilian casualties — Karzai struck at the heart of Petraeus’s counterinsurgency strategy....

Ambassador Mark Sedwill said that he and General David Petraeus, the top US and NATO commander in the country, plan to report at the Lisbon Conference that international forces have made significant progress against the Taliban since President Obama ordered 30,000 additional US troops to the region last summer.

Afghans Just Like Americans

The survey released yesterday by the San Francisco-based Asia Foundation found that 83 percent of Afghan adults back negotiations with armed antigovernment groups, up from 71 percent last year.
Yes, it is ALWAY$ a $ELECT FEW that PROFIT from WAR!
But it also said 55 percent of Afghans had no sympathy for the insurgency this year, up from 36 percent last year. Twenty-six percent of respondents said they had “a little sympathy’’ for the aims of the insurgency.
Must be the Pashtuns.
Analysts said the survey reflected growing doubt that the government and its NATO allies can defeat the insurgency with military means and that after 30 years of war, some Afghans are willing to sacrifice some freedoms for the sake of peace....
That sure seems familiar, America.
After nearly 10 years, NATO’s military commitment is not open-ended and President Hamid Karzai has made reconciliation a top priority.
Since when? What ever happened to those peace talks anyway?
He has offered jobs and housing to the villages of Taliban fighters who defect, and recently formed a 70-member High Peace Council to facilitate negotiations. The government and NATO say contacts are being made with top insurgent leaders but no formal peace talks are underway....

Government forces who regained control of Ghazni Province’s Khogyani district headquarters a few hours later discovered that the 16 Afghan policemen stationed there were missing....
They defected and joined the "insurgency."
The 16 policemen were not yet accounted for, said Mohammed Ismail Jahanger, a spokesman for the provincial governor. It was unclear whether they ran away, were captured, or voluntarily joined the Taliban, he said.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said all the police guarding the headquarters were either killed or taken prisoner and their weapons and vehicles were confiscated. He put out a press release later saying the Taliban had left the district after damaging the headquarters.
This type of stuff is starting to stink like everything in my paper.
In southern Helmand Province, NATO and Afghan troops killed 15 insurgents in a two-day battle....
Also in Helmand, two Afghan women were found shot to death in Naway-e-Barakzayi district, said provincial government spokesman Daud Ahmadi. They had been running a small organization helping other women set up businesses.

The drug dough funds more black ops as well as propping up bank profits.
About a ton of narcotics was confiscated in Thursday’s raid, but that is unlikely to have a significant impact on Afghanistan’s drug trade. The country produces enough raw opium to manufacture 360 tons of heroin a year, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Thirty-nine NATO service members have been killed so far this month in Afghanistan, including at least 33 Americans.
The five American soldiers who died Sunday were "conducting clearing operations" when they came under fire in Watapur valley, said Master Sgt. Brian Sipp, a spokesman for the international military alliance....
Another American soldier died in the area Tuesday when insurgents fired on his unit, according to the military.
All six deaths occurred during a four-day push called Operation Bulldog Bite....

Another American soldier died in the area Tuesday when insurgents fired on his unit, according to the military.
All six deaths occurred during a four-day push called Operation Bulldog Bite....

Operation Bulldog Bite has killed at least five insurgents, though there have been unconfirmed reports of as many as 49 insurgents killed, said Maj. Mary Constantino, a spokeswoman for U.S. forces in the area....
