Army Specialist Jonathan Curtis of Belmont was doing his job Monday, guarding the entrance to an American base in the Taliban heartland of Afghanistan. When a soldier from the Afghan National Army approached the checkpoint, Curtis intercepted the visitor, as he had been trained to do.
That act in Kandahar would be his last....
Raised in an affluent family, Curtis chose an unconventional path among his peers, enlisting in the Army in 2004 with the goal of becoming an infantryman, his parents said....
Jonathan Curtis, who served a 14-month tour in Iraq, had been stationed in Afghanistan since May. He leaves his wife, Samantha, and a 7-month-old daughter, Tessa-Marie, of Knoxville, Tenn.
Curtis’s patriotism led to military service, his father said, at a time when the all-volunteer Army limits the burdens of the battlefield to the highly motivated.

“Jon died in a war that is pretty much out of the consciousness of the average American,’’ Philip Curtis said. “It’s just something that goes on. Before his enlistment, Pamela Curtis said, “he wasn’t particularly good with people who wanted to make him jump, and turn on a dime, and were screaming at him.’’ But after basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., she said, “he came back standing up taller and a number of pounds lighter and looking me in the eye. He had a whole different demeanor about him.’’

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. — The Army sergeant accused of masterminding a plan to kill Afghan civilians for sport and goading other soldiers to do the same appeared at a military hearing yesterday to determine whether there is enough evidence to court-martial him.
In what has emerged as one of the most gruesome cases of the Afghan war, fellow soldiers say Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs also threatened them, collected fingers of the dead, and found it amusing to slaughter animals with his assault rifle....
Of course, do it on a mass scale with media lies behind you and they call it liberation.
Gibbs reportedly spoke of getting away with killing a family when he served in Iraq — a claim investigators are still investigating.
I won't be holding my breath on that investigation.
The soldiers said he devised scenarios under which he could kill Afghan civilians, suggesting in one case that if he and his men came across someone in a village flagged as Taliban-influenced, they could toss a grenade and claim they had been responding to a threat. Gibbs also illicitly collected weapons — including an AK-47 and a rocket-propelled grenade — which he could plant on the bodies of dead civilians to make them appear to be combatants, the soldiers said....

Several days later, on Nov. 2, Zimmerman was killed in a firefight....

The Federal Reserve’s plan to buy more Treasury bonds has caused critics at home to warn high inflation and financial turmoil are inevitable.
It turns out many foreigners are angry, too.

They say the Fed’s $600 billion program is a scheme to give US exporters an unfair edge — one that endangers the global economy.
That is what everything the Fed does is.
Is it? Or is the Fed’s plan a credible way to help end a jobs crisis and revitalize a still-tepid economy?
The last place you want that questioned answered is in the banker's paper.
Few dispute that Fed chairman Ben Bernanke is taking a gamble.

Many economists say the Fed did not have much choice — not with the US unemployment rate stalled at 9.6 percent, short-term interest rates already near zero, and Congress refusing to spend more to jolt the economy.

So the Fed announced plans to print enough money to buy an average of $75 billion in Treasury bonds each month for eight months. And it left the door open for more. The bond-purchase program is intended to energize the economy by forcing down long-term interest rates. Those lower rates might encourage some consumers and businesses to borrow and spend more.
Or bankers can just STUFF THAT MONEY in their pockets like they did the last time.
That is not likely, its critics say. For one thing, mortgage rates have fallen to record lows without reviving the housing market, reducing high unemployment, or stimulating much growth.
And yet here we have been told we have been in recovery for over a year, blah-blah-blah....
Would people and businesses that can’t or won’t borrow now at super-low rates start borrowing if interest rates on loans decline a bit more — and borrow enough to rejuvenate the economy?

A bigger hope is that lower rates will lift stock prices.
