"Lawmakers assail food-safety test secrecy" by Associated Press | February 6, 2009

WASHINGTON - Lawmakers reacted angrily yesterday when told that food makers and state safety inspectors are allowed to keep test results secret. That keeps federal health officials in the dark even when products have been contaminated by salmonella or other dangerous bacteria.

"I'd like to see some people go to jail," Senator Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, said during a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing on a deadly salmonella outbreak linked to a Georgia peanut plant that has sickened more than 550 people and killed at least eight.

Federal law does not require reporting of contaminants if companies receive private test results showing the companies or states find them in their inspections, said Dr. Stephen Sundlof, food safety director for the Food and Drug Administration.

"That's one of the very serious loopholes we need to plug," said Senator Saxby Chambliss, a Georgia Republican and ranking minority member on the panel. Sundlof defended the FDA's handling of the current outbreak....

(Blog author is speechless when he reads stuff like this; the government doesn't give a damn about you, your health, or anything else. It has become pretty clear what interests they serve, and it's not yours, American)

Leahy said food manufacturers should face possible jail time and other tough penalties to beef up compliance with federal food safety rules. "Fines won't do it," he said.

Also yesterday, the Department of Agriculture suspended Peanut Corp. from participating in government contract programs for at least a year.

They POISON and KILL PEOPLE and they get a SLAP on the WRIST?!!! If I went down the street and murdered my neighbor, I'd get life!!!!

These guys kill multiple people when they KNEW their product was contaminated and nothing?

Secretary Tom Vilsack also removed company president Stewart Parnell from USDA's Peanut Standards Board.

"Attorney general orders review of state secret claims; Holder seeks to ensure legal use of privilege" by Devlin Barrett, Associated Press | February 10, 2009

WASHINGTON - .... Meanwhile, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee is proposing a "truth commission" to investigate abuses of detainees, politically inspired moves at the Justice Department, and other decisions made during the Bush administration.

Senator Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, said the primary goal of the commission would be to learn the truth rather than prosecute former officials, but said the inquiry should reach far beyond looking for misdeeds at the Justice Department under Bush to include matters of Iraq prewar intelligence and the Defense Department.

Well, I WANT the TRUTH about SO MANY THINGS, sir; however, above all, 9/11 is PARAMOUNT!!! Iraq is definitely worth a look, as is the root of Al-CIA-Duh.

Leahy outlined his suggestion for a "truth and reconciliation" commission during a speech at Georgetown University yesterday. "I'm doing this not to humiliate people or punish people but to get the truth out," he said.

The panel he envisions would be modeled after one that investigated the apartheid regime in South Africa. It would have subpoena power but would not bring criminal charges, he said.

Well, SOMEONE BETTER!!!!

Among the matters Leahy wants investigated by such a commission are: the firings of US attorneys, treatment and torture of terror suspect detainees, and the authorization of warrantless wiretapping.

For more on the abominable atrocity of U.S. torture, go HERE and scroll down.

"Rather than vengeance, we need a fair-minded pursuit of what actually happened" during the Bush administration, Leahy said. Some Democrats have called for criminal investigations of those who authorized certain controversial tactics in the war on terror. Republicans have countered that such decisions made in the wake of the 2001 terror attacks should not be second-guessed.

Not ALL REPUBLICANS because I AM ONE -- and I'M NOT ALONE!!!

Representative Lamar Smith of Texas, the senior Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said no good purpose can be served by Leahy's suggestion, and called it a political scheme "to unjustly malign former Bush administration officials."

How can you unjustly malign lying, mass-murdering war criminals?

A long-running commission-style inquiry could help Democrats politically, if it kept reminding voters of unpopular decisions made by Bush and his supporters.

The more I think of a CONTROLLED COMMITTEE of COVER-UP (like the Warren and 9/11 whitewashes) the less I'm liking it. And notice how the divide-driving, mafia media war brings politics into it.

Yet some Democrats in Congress have already suggested that the current criminal investigation into the firing of US attorneys may serve as a shield to prevent damaging facts about Republican officials from coming to light.

"We need to be able to read the page before we turn the page," Leahy said. "We need to come to a shared understanding of the failures of the recent past."

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!!
