BANGKOK - A Russian businessman dubbed the "Merchant of Death" for allegedly arming dictators and guerrillas told a Thai court yesterday he was not involved in a scheme to sell weapons to Colombian rebels, as he sought to prevent his extradition to the United States.
Viktor Bout, a former Soviet Air Force officer, has long been linked to some of Africa's most notorious conflicts, allegedly supplying arms to former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor and Libyan leader Moammar Khadafy. He has repeatedly denied any involvement in illicit activities and has never been prosecuted, despite being the subject of UN sanctions and a travel ban.

The United States is seeking Bout's extradition on charges he conspired to sell millions of dollars worth of weapons, including 100 surface-to-air missiles and armor-piercing rockets to leftist rebels. The 41-year-old Russian - who was purportedly the model for the arms dealer portrayed by Nicolas Cage in the 2005 movie, "Lord of War" - was arrested in March during a sting operation in which undercover US agents posed as rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known by its Spanish acronym, FARC....

The opposition senator who brokered the release, Piedad Cordoba, yesterday called the FARC's killing of the Indians "a major snag" for efforts to obtain new releases or a prisoner swap.
She said she feared it would radicalize both sides of the conflict. The UN's deputy high commissioner for refugees, Craig Johnstone, was trying to reach a refugee camp yesterday to discuss the killings with Awa tribal officials, an agency spokeswoman said.

"Colombia: 11 Israelis suspected of soliciting sex from minors
Colombian police in the port city of Cartagena arrested 11 Israelis for the alleged consumption of drugs and solicitation of sex from local prostitutes, including minors, authorities said Monday.
Local police official Col. Carlos Mena said the Israelis traveled from Bogota to Cartagena, "where they were provided with drugs and women," adding that "underage girls were involved."
According to police, the Israelis were arrested in a luxury residence while in possession of what authorities say were hallucinogenic drugs. At least one minor was in the apartment at the time of the arrest, police said, adding that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
A few months a Thai court sentenced two Israelis to death after they had been convicted of drug-trafficking. The men, 34-year-old Vladimir Akronik and 37-year-old Alon Mahluf, were detained in the vicinity of Bangkok's Kao San Road in possession of 23,000 ecstasy pills in December, 2007. "
