"Tysabri study shows patients improve" by Chris Reidy, Globe Staff | February 10, 2009

Many multiple sclerosis patients treated with Tysabri remain free of disease activity for two years, Biogen Idec Inc. and Elan Corp. said. The companies said a study has shown that five times as many MS patients taking Tysabri were free from disease activity compared with those on a placebo in the overall patient population.

"Results from this retrospective analysis showed that two years after beginning treatment with Tysabri, 37 percent of patients remained free of disease activity, compared to 7 percent of placebo-treated patients," the companies said. "Sixty-four percent of patients showed no sign of relapse or sustained disability progression, and 58 percent were free of radiological disease activity."

Tysabri's sales growth has slowed amid growing concerns about a potentially deadly side effect, a brain disease called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

"NeuroMetrix agrees to pay $1.2m in probe" by Todd Wallack, Globe Staff | February 10, 2009

NeuroMetrix Inc., a Waltham medical device maker, agreed to pay a criminal penalty of $1.2 million and change its business practices to avoid prosecution for illegal kickbacks to doctors, the Department of Justice said.

The agreement resolves a Justice Department investigation into the company's NC-stat System, a device used to diagnose conditions related to carpal tunnel syndrome, leg pain, and other disorders....

In addition, NeuroMetrix agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle civil charges that it encouraged doctors to improperly bill Medicare under a higher reimbursement code than was warranted for the test performed.

Translation: they RIPPED OFF TAXPAYERS over HEALTH CARE for the ELDERLY!!

"We are pleased to put this matter behind us rather than continue with protracted legal proceedings," said Shai N. Gozani, the chief executive of NeuroMetrix, in a statement....

Yup, now they can get back to ripping people off.
