.... Boston's travails with the tall ships seemed a world away from the placid preparations underway in Charleston, S.C., the other US city where the ships make port.
There, the ships are expected to draw about 100,000 people, and the organizers and city easily agreed that the $50,000 in public safety costs would be paid for by the organizers through private donations and the sale of $15 tickets.
"We have a really great working relationship with the city, and they help in every way they can," said Bradford R. Van Liew, executive director of the South Carolina Maritime Foundation, which organizes the Charleston festival.
