Three companies are slashing a total of nearly 500 jobs in Massachusetts by summer’s end because of the economic downturn.
Silver Line Building Products Corp., based in New Jersey and a division of Andersen Windows, closed its window factory in Fall River yesterday, putting 237 people out of work. Maureen McDonough, a spokeswoman for Andersen, said a decline in housing starts has decreased demand for windows dramatically. She said the Fall River employees were notified of the closing 60 days ago.
Sun Microsystems Inc. notified the state that it is laying off 149 workers in Burlington between Aug. 24 and Sept. 22. Dana Lengkeek, a spokeswoman for the company, said the cuts are part of a November announcement that the computer developer would reduce its workforce nationwide by approximately 5,000 to 6,000.

Also, Seagate Technology, based in the Cayman Islands, said it is cutting 102 jobs at its Shrewsbury facility.
