AMESBURY - A widow burying her only child, Holly Shay stood before hundreds who filled St. Joseph Catholic Church and spoke of her undying love, and deep grief, at the death of her son, Army Sergeant Jordan M. Shay, who was killed in a combat vehicle accident weeks into his second tour of duty in Iraq....

Moments later, as a cold, steady rain fell, Shay accepted a Bronze Star Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal, awarded posthumously to her son, according to the citation read by an Army official.

Shay, 22, was one of two soldiers killed in a vehicle rollover on Sept. 3 in Baqubah, Iraq. The Army has not released details of the accident, which is still being investigated, a spokesman said.

The investigation “could take weeks’’ to complete, Master Sergeant Pallas A. Wahl, a spokesman for the Massachusetts National Guard, said in an e-mail yesterday....
