California Quakes

Couldn't have been too much of a temblor; they only got one brief in the printed papers.

"Thousands without power after quake

FRESNO - A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California yesterday afternoon, shaking buildings south of the Oregon border and knocking out power in several coastal communities. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman J.D. Guidi said power outages were widespread across most of Humboldt County, affecting about 25,000 customers.

I guess that was too late for my Boston Sunday Globe.

Calif. residents clean up from quake

EUREKA, Calif. - Residents of a Northern California county gingerly cleaned up yesterday after the area dodged a catastrophe, escaping a 6.5-magnitude earthquake with little more than bumps, cuts, and broken glass. The quake’s location - offshore, deep under the ocean, and away from urban areas - helped the region escape relatively unscathed what could have been a major disaster.

Gee, that was fast.

Power back up, too?

A didn't kind of quake.

"Calif. voters take anger to ballot box; Initiatives aimed at fixing budget crisis piling up" by Jennifer Steinhauer, New York Times | January 10, 2010

LOS ANGELES - From San Diego to Mount Shasta, voters are expressing mounting disgust over California’s fiscal meltdown and deteriorating services, and they are offering scores of voter initiatives that seek to change how the state does business.

More than 30 such initiatives - among more than 60 so far - are wending their way toward the ballot box.... Despite the fact that past initiatives helped get California into its budget crisis - forcing spending in some areas while limiting taxation in others - the pileup of new ones suggests many voters still believe they hold the solution to the state’s mess. Some initiatives, in fact, could even limit the initiative process itself, or erase old ones.

The number of initiatives so far, while high, is not the largest in history. But the rage that underlies them has not been seen in decades, said lawmakers, pollsters, political consultants, and the proponents. “The feeling is one of revolt,’’ said John Grubb, the campaign director for Repair California, a coalition behind a pair of initiatives to call a constitutional convention. “And come January, they will start negotiating the budget again, and there will be more fear and loathing.’’

Right, a REVOLT to RAISE TAXES!!

Pffffffttt!!

While many of the measures will fail to get enough signatures to make it to Election Day in November, the sheer number of them reflects voters’ frustration....
