Meekly Stepping Aside in Florida

"Clinton urged Fla. Democrat to drop bid for US Senate

WASHINGTON — Bill Clinton tried to persuade Democratic Representative Kendrick Meek to drop out of the Florida Senate race, telling Meek that he could make a greater impact if he quit the three-way race and endorsed Governor Charlie Crist, a Republican who is running as an independent, a Clinton official confirmed late yesterday.

Is he still your hero Democrats?

Umm, Bill, your GLOBALIST STRIPES are SHOWING!

The former president, a longtime friend of Meek’s, first worked through his senior adviser, Doug Band, to make the deal, the spokesman, Matt McKenna, confirmed.

Then why did he plunge the knife in his back?

The exchange was first reported by Politico.

Meek seemed amenable, and on two occasions nearly went through with it, McKenna said. But he ultimately changed his mind.

Meek has been running a consistent third in Florida polls of the Senate race, behind both Crist and the front-runner, Republican Marco Rubio.

And he sure changed his tune:

"Meek says Clinton did not tell him to quit Senate race

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Florida’s three-way Senate race grew testier yesterday as the Democratic candidate denied assertions that President Clinton had advised him to drop out, saying the idea came instead from his independent rival, Governor Charlie Crist.

US Representative Kendrick Meek went on national morning TV news shows to swat down reports that he told Clinton he would drop out to improve Crist’s chances of beating the front-runner, Republican Marco Rubio.

So this was the BIG POLITICLA NEWS the AmeriKan people were trted to yestreday, huh?

I'm glad I no longer watch "news" shows on television.

Crist left the GOP to run as an independent after polls showed Tea Party favorite Rubio handily beating him in the primary.

Meek said it was Crist who suggested the idea backstage at a South Florida event this month.

“Governor Crist talked to me about getting out of the race. I recommended to the governor that he should consider getting out of the race,’’ Meek said on CNN’s “American Morning.’’

Crist told reporters in Panama City yesterday he discussed the possibility of Meek dropping out with the congressman when they crossed paths earlier this week.

Polls indicate Meek is badly trailing Crist and Rubio.
