Occupation Iraq: Boston Globe Boat Row

Another in a long line of front-page propaganda specials about what a success the invasion and occupation has been.

Like most sports in Iraq, rowing is still rebuilding from the destructive decades under Saddam Hussein and his sadistic older son Uday, who ran the country’s Olympic committee with an arbitrary and brutal hand for nearly two decades, torturing athletes whose performances disappointed him. The punishments were so savage that many athletes tried to avoid making national teams rather than risk drawing Uday’s attention.

Given the ongoing turmoil in their country, merely getting on the Tigris for an extended workout has been a challenge for the Iraqi rowers....
