Angry mobs burned tires and torched buses in the aftermath of the bombings in Karachi.
The attack came amid tensions between Washington and Islamabad over NATO helicopter incursions that have led Pakistan to close a key border crossing used to ferry supplies to Western troops in Afghanistan.
Despite US apologies over the incursions, one of which left two Pakistani soldiers dead, Islamabad said yesterday that it had yet to decide when to reopen the crossing.

The explosions at the Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine in Karachi occurred last evening, the busiest time of the week for Sufi shrines across the country.
Thousands typically visit the Ghazi shrine on Thursdays to pray, distribute food to the poor, and toss rose petals on the grave of the saint.
An Associated Press reporter saw blood, flesh, and shoes splattered at the shrine compound in Karachi. A young boy with bloodstained clothes cried for help in a police vehicle, television footage showed. Dozens of ambulances lined up outside to take victims to hospitals....

KARACHI — Gunmen killed at least 25 people in Karachi in 24 hours, raising tensions in Pakistan’s largest city as voters cast ballots yesterday to replace a provincial lawmaker killed in August.

Police said they were still investigating the motives behind the shootings, but many “target killings’’ in Karachi have been linked to gangs controlled by the city’s main political parties, which have been feuding for much of the past 20 years.
Not "terrorists" or Taliban?
“We cannot say whether all the killings were politically motivated or some gangs were involved because the killings took place in different parts of the city and were not confined to the area where the elections were being held,’’ said Karachi’s police chief, Fayyza Leghari.
The two parties most linked to violence in Karachi, the Muttahida Quami Movement and the Awami National Party, have their electoral bases in different ethnic groups that make up a large chunk of the city’s population.
The Muttahida Quami Movement says it represents the Urdu-speaking descendants of people who came to Karachi from India soon after the birth of Pakistan in 1947. It is secular and speaks out against the so-called Talibanization of the city, a jab at the Awami National Party, which represents ethnic Pashtuns from the Taliban heartland in the northwest.
Raza Haider, the member of the provincial assembly who was gunned down in August, was a senior member of Muttahida Quami.

After the shooting, the movement accused the Awami National Party of supporting Islamist militants suspected of being behind the murder — an allegation denied by the party.
Both parties were competing for Haider’s vacant seat, but the Awami National Party said Saturday that it would boycott the election, saying the rival party would rig the vote....

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — President Asif Ali Zardari vowed yesterday to restore order in the southern port city of Karachi, which has been brought to a standstill by an escalating turf war among several political parties that has left at least 60 people dead over the past four days.
Public transportation was suspended yesterday morning, and schools and markets remained closed. A day earlier, gunmen opened fire in the Sher Shah commercial neighborhood of the city, killing at least 12 people. Several others, mostly belonging to Pashtun and Baluch ethnicities, were gunned down in other parts of the city.
The groups the government has the most trouble with!
Paramilitary troops have been deployed in several areas of Karachi, but Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani ruled out sending Army troops.
The unrest has broad ramifications. Karachi is the financial and commercial hub of the country.
Another way of WEAKENING Pakistan!
In addition, it plays a key role in the Afghan war: Supplies for US and NATO forces are shipped to the city for trucking across the country and into Afghanistan. Those, too, have drawn attacks.
And yet we were told it wasn't that big a deal and wasn't impacting the war effort in previous articles.
The lies and mixed messages are getting to be a real turn-off, AmeriKan media.
A city of more than 16 million people, Karachi is awash with illegal weapons and has a history of sectarian and ethnic strife, as well as violent political clashes over the economic spoils and the ties to criminal syndicates that come with political control of the city.
The Jewish mafia is the dominant force here in AmeriKa. They use banks rather than a gun.
Tit-for-tat killings among various ethnic groups and political parties’ workers have left more than 300 dead since 2008; some analysts see the potential for a civil war.

Interior Minister Rehman Malikhas often rushed in to mediate, but peace never lasted.
The latest violence broke on the eve of an election for a provincial assembly seat that was left vacant after an assassination in August. Tensions appeared to focus on political parties that are coalition partners at the federal level but that have clashed over controlling their respective strongholds and increasing their influence in Karachi.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, or MQM, which controls the city government, is a secular group that draws support from Urdu-speaking people whose ancestors migrated from India after partition in 1947. The Awami National Party has an Islamic Pashtun base that has been growing because of migration from the north, where the Army has opened a series of campaigns against the Pakistani Taliban.
We call them WAR REFUGEES!
MQM has also clashed with supporters of the Pakistan Peoples Party, the national party led by Zardari, in their stronghold of Lyari, a neighborhood infested with drugs and criminal gangs.
Oh, so the GOVERNMENT had a MOTIVE to KILL the MAN, didn't they?

Pakistan is majority Sunni, and sectarian violence pitting Sunnis against Shi’ite Muslims is common in the country.
