HOUSTON — A kitchen fire filled a home daycare center with smoke yesterday, killing three children and injuring four others. Firefighters ran with babies and small children in their arms to nearby ambulances on the crowded street, a fire official said.... 

The daycare center was licensed last March to Jessica Tata, 22. She did not respond to a message left by a reporter.

HOUSTON — A Houston home day-care operator left the children she was caring for without adult supervision while a stovetop burner was on before a blaze that killed four youngsters and injured three, according to an arrest affidavit made public yesterday.

Investigators believe the burner was the source of last week’s fire.

Hours after the new details about the blaze were released, Houston Fire Department officials announced that day-care operator Jessica Tata had fled the Unites States and they had asked the US Marshals Service in Houston to help track her down.

Officials believe Tata has fled to Nigeria, where she is originally from....

"Care provider shopped as fire hit, police say" by Associated Press / March 2, 2011

HOUSTON — Investigators say a home day-care operator who left the children she was watching alone was shopping when a fire that killed four children began, according to a court document made public yesterday.

Surveillance video shows Jessica Tata was shopping at a Target store about a mile away from the facility when the fire started last Thursday, investigators said in a probable-cause affidavit....

Tata, 22, has fled to her native Nigeria since being charged in the fire....

It was not immediately known whether Tata had an attorney. Attempts to contact her family in person and by phone at multiple addresses and telephone listings have been unsuccessful....

"Video said to show sex assault of girl" by Associated Press / March 10, 2011

CLEVELAND, Texas — A cellphone video that was passed between an 11-year-old girl’s classmates shows adolescent boys and men in their 20s sexually assaulting the girl in an abandoned trailer, authorities said. 

Eighteen people — including two star high school athletes and adults with criminal records — face assault and abuse charges....

"In Texas on Friday, a judge refused to block the state's switch to pentobarbital, which was opposed by a death row inmate. Cleve Foster, 47, is scheduled to be executed Tuesday for the slaying of a Sudanese woman in Fort Worth in 2002. He would be the first Texas inmate to have pentobarbital used as part of the lethal injection.
