ITAMAR, West Bank — A Palestinian infiltrated a Jewish West Bank settlement early this morning and killed five people, the Israeli military said.

The Israeli media reported that the dead are all members of the same family — parents and three children. The family members — including an 11-year-old, a 3-year-old, and an infant — were all stabbed in their sleep, the YNet website reported.
The military said it is sweeping the area in search of the perpetrator and has set up checkpoints throughout the West Bank. It has instructed all residents to stay in their homes during the extensive sweeps.
The military blocked the entrance to the northern West Bank settlement of Itamar, as soldiers poured inside and a pair of ambulances departed.
The overnight attack is the first attack against settlers in months and the first of its kind and scope in years. It marks a rare outburst of violence during a relatively calm period.

The governor of the nearby Palestinian city of Nablus, Jibril Bakri, said that Palestinian security forces were also searching for suspects. It was a rare instance of the two sides both searching for militant suspects, though Israeli forces and those of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority in the West Bank do cooperate on security issues....

JERUSALEM — While the country was still reeling from the gruesome attack, in which two parents and three young children were fatally stabbed as they slept, the Israeli government announced Sunday that it had approved the construction of between 400 and 500 new homes in major West Bank settlement blocs.
