Globe Lunch Break

Well, I didn't have any breakfast

Did an Attleboro administrator order students to go without lunch?

Is there ever a time when the authorities and their mouthpiece don't distort or lie?

You might want to go out for lunch.

"Taco Bell going on a health kick" by Candice Choi  |  Associated Press, April 11, 2013

NEW YORK — Taco Bell isn’t putting down the chalupa just yet, but it wants to start shedding its reputation as a purveyor of junk food.

The chain said Wednesday that it is exploring ways to offer more ‘‘balanced choices,’’ marking just the latest sign that the fast-food industry is trying to adapt to changing tastes and upend the conventional wisdom that it only offers caloric indulgences....

"Kraft Foods expects lower 4Q revenue" by Anne D’Innocenzio and Michelle Chapman  |  Associated Press, February 16, 2013

NORTHFIELD, Ill. — Kraft Foods, the company behind brands such as Oscar Mayer and Miracle Whip, said Friday that it expects to report lower revenue for the fourth quarter and raised its earnings forecast for this year.

‘‘The fourth quarter was one of real progress and some significant disappointment,’’ Kraft chief executive Tony Vernon told investors during a conference call Friday. ‘‘We made great strides in productivity, profit, and cash, but we really missed our topline.’’

Kraft, based in Northfield, Ill., is looking to redefine itself after splitting last year from its global snack foods business called Mondelez International Inc. Mondelez has brands including Oreo and Nabisco. The split was intended to allow each of the companies to focus on a more targeted portfolio of products, thus accelerating growth....

Kraft said the decline is due in part to financially strapped mothers.

I was told Healey was helping with that, but maybe not.

Hey, look on the bright side, ladies; at least banks are booming in the golden age of corporate profits.

And to drink?

"Coca-Cola is facing a tough time: People are drinking less soda in the United States and Europe, and uncertain economic conditions around the world are weighing on the world’s biggest beverage maker. Profit rose in the fourth quarter, as it benefited from growth in emerging markets and a shift in the calendar that resulted in two extra selling days for the period. But for the October-to-December period, the Coca-Cola Co. earned $1.87 billion. For the full year, net income was $9.02 billion."

Oh, how tough for Coke!

I wi$h I was having $uch tough times.

Maybe a Pepsi then?

"PepsiCo’s net income rises 17%" Associated Press, February 15, 2013

NEW YORK — PepsiCo Inc.’s net income rose 17 percent in the fourth quarter as it raised prices and sold more snacks and drinks around the world. Earnings and revenue beat analysts’ estimates.

The company also provided an annual earnings outlook in line with Wall Street expectations and raised its quarterly dividend by 5.6 percent....

The company has been looking for growth in countries such as China and India. But over the past year, PepsiCo has also made a point of investing more heavily in its namesake soda in North America, most recently with sponsorship of the Super Bowl halftime show.

PepsiCo is also focusing on new products. This month, it’s introducing a Mountain Dew breakfast drink marketed to young men who don’t like coffee or tea.

Yeah, starting your day with a soda will really help that obesity problem in the country.

For the period ended Dec. 29, PepsiCo earned $1.66 billion....

Poor Pepsi!  They didn't beat out Coke!
