Sunday Globe Special: Leaky Pipes

"UNH students burned when pipe bursts

Three female students at the University of New Hampshire were burned Saturday afternoon after a hot water pipe burst outside a residence hall in Durham, N.H., a spokeswoman said. The injuries, believed to be third-degree burns on the women’s feet, occurred around 2:30 p.m. as they fled from Hunter Hall, a three-story dormitory that houses about 115 students, spokeswoman Erika Mantz said. Mantz said the injured students were taken to local hospitals, and later transferred to Boston hospitals. The hot water damaged four rooms and a small section of the first-floor hallway, Mantz said."

"Refueled Vermont nuclear plant back in operation

The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant is back in operation after a 26-day outage for refueling and maintenance. The plant, owned by the New Orleans-headquartered Entergy Corp., officially went on line at 12:21 p.m. Friday, company officials said in a statement. About 1,000 extra workers were added temporarily to the plant’s usual contingent of more than 600 to replace about a third of the fuel assemblies in the reactor. Workers also replaced a large electrical transformer and a recirculation pump. The work should set up Vermont Yankee to run for another 18 months before its next refueling outage."
